Evening. Just got in myself. Putting various bits together in readiness for a new bulkhead and then chassis. No probs re the rockers. It's very easy to do although the handing of the rockers is pretty obvious!

On the oil pump the new base looks good - no problem with that. I made up a stainless plate to increase the pressure and resurface the base but I'm not sure its necessary. Have photos and specs though if you need.

All coming on very well. I forgot to mention about removing the webbing. Forgot that bit - sorry!

Do you think it might be worth using some plasti gauge on a couple of the bottom bearings to check the clearance while you have it on the stand / sump off? Won't take long at the moment.

Jonny, hello. Thanks for reporting back :)

Regards the bottom end, let's get finished up top and then I'll spin it over and commence on the bottom. It is definitely worth doing anything possible whilst it is on the stand, don't want to be putting this in to find an issue! (nobody mention piston rings ok?!?!?!)

Next step, source a few bolts I'm missing, and then I'm able to get the timing cover sealed and fitted for good. Then the pulleys can go on and I can add a few more ancillaries, then check that tdc discrepancy.

Then it's probably time to turn it over and work on the bottom end.

Ha, just popped the spigot bush out using a 13mm socket (sealed up with a nut and bolt running through it) and the grease method.

I found out how to do it (thanks landyzone search) and guessed it would work, then watched it work on YouTube, but it still raised a chuckle when it popped out so easily :)

Input shaft would have been ideal but I guessed my 13mm socket (just about 19mm outside dia) would have been ok for my spigot bush that was just over 19mm inside.

Was a reasonable fit but with sharp hard taps it popped out.

First filled it with grease, then put the bolt through the socket to make it solid drift, pushed it in to remove any air then when it went stiff gave it a crack. It popped out halfway, one more and it was done.

As above, didn't expect it to work with around .5mm gap!

I don't believe it!!

6 out of 8 of the conrods are fitted the wrong way round as are 7 of the big end caps :(

So, we are about to set about removing the crank so we can spin the pistons round in their bores 180 degrees.

First question is I hope this isnt going to cause an issue? (basically undo big ends, sink pistons to top of bores, remove crank, spin appropriate pistons, refit crank, refit big ends)

Will I need new main bearing cap bolts? Even though the engine has never been run?

Please say I dont have to strip the top end again and take the heads off to do this :(

Ok thanks chaps, yes we are going to remove the crank and spin the pistons so all the dimples are together, and then make sure the big end caps are fitted correctly also.

Pistons are now spun, we're just having a breather and then the crank will go back in.

Just to check, loctite on the big end nuts but not on the main cap bolts?

Ok!

So that little episode put something of a spanner in our works tonight!

Anyway, by 2.15am we ended up with this:

A built up motor, spun over by hand and now filled with oil. Pump is Vaseline packed so it is ready tomorrow to have an oil pressure test, and then it needs a few ancillary hoses fitting and it's ready to slot back in the car.

The car itself needs a good clean and tidy before this can go in though!

Good job we checked that bottom end by the way!

Was just going through the torques then realised our sd1 motor had a stud fitted to the number 4 nearing cap, to support the oil pickup. This fouled the baffle in our landy sump.

So I'm reading in Haynes about removing bearing caps and waddayaknow I realise the bottom end has been put together all mixed up just like upstairs.

Definitely new crank, shells and main bolts by the way!
