I did run it on flushing oil for a while and then gradual mixes for about 2 weeks with numerous changes and then regular change ever since so maybe it cleaned it up a bit?

As above there was a leak on the rocker cover with evidence of mud getting in there :( but other than a bit of splish splash from disassembling a wet engine I don't think there was much water about, never any evidence of emulsion!

Have got a high pressure valve on the way so will compare it with the standard one when I remove it!
 
I don't know I thought the grey stuff was metal paste. That said, around the front of that rocker cover that was leaking, it was grey in the gap and inside around that area it was grey (and muddy!) so one would assume grey means water.

Just odd how it was sat on all the flat surfaces, grey and sticky!

Anyway, progress last night, a pile of painted parts:

Hoping the stuff from v8 tuner arrives today so I can build it up this weekend!

Stripped the oil pump last night, gears look superb and release valve not far off new. Pump cover slighty scored but looks to have been a replacement item at some stage...

Will measure it all up for tolerance and see whats what!

What paint did you use, i ended up going for high temp stuf.... wasnt sure how hot it would get.
 
Autoglym alloy wheel silver, Autoglym satin black (cos we use them at work) and for the rockers, upol adhesion promoter, upol grey primer, Halfords ford radiant red and Halfords clear lacquer.

It should be ok for engine temps. Had some cracking on the sump last time I painted it but only a quick job and didn't lacquer it which may have led to the cracking/crazing.

Going to do the sump same as the rockers.
 
Meanwhile, and thanks to charlie my forward thinking postman, the stuff has arrived from v8 tuner. I also received my stainless bolt set so I'm good to go with the build for today :)

You can see the two engine mounts, the oil pump gears (that looks identical to the ones I have removed :(), the high pressure relief valve, the front cover gasket and the cam button kit, which you can see here:

Interestingly this has the remnants of a land rover factory label on the bag, so must be a part supplied by land rover. It appears to be slightly different to others that I have read about, where this one is supplied with a spacer, which I assume replaces the dizzy gear washer and then you simply torque the bolt down on top of it. Great idea in my opinion, as long as the spacing is correct, or it wears the Teflon accordingly.

When I come to assembly I will test fit the timing cover with some marking blue on the button to see what clearance I'm looking at.

So yeah apart from that it's inspect the oil pump and see about drilling this hole for the valley drain that jonnyt is talking about, scary stuff! :D
 
I was hoping mine would be totally worn out and so these would be a great improvement but I feel like I've spent 30 quid on gears that are not necessary.

Any ideas what's best? Replace or keep originals?
 
if the others are not worn I would keep the old ones as they are already run in and I dont trust modern parts made in india.

if the old ones are shagged and james will know then you have no choice lol

You won't need the spacer with the cam button. That is only needed if you remove the dizzy drive and go electronic as far as I can tell.

No need for the engineering blue when fitting. It's a trial and error fit. Having put the bolt in put the front housing on (remember to use the gasket). You will feel it interfering with the housing. Take the housing off and remove the bolt. Take a little Teflon away and then refit. As you are going for 0.005" that is all I took off at a time to make sure I didn't take too much off. Repeat until the cam button no longer interferes with the front cover.

Then measure the movement of the cam. I used a needle dti (rather than plunger) on a cam lobe to measure the lateral movement. Set up on a mag base on a 10kg weight sitting across the valley. You may have to release the rockers to release any pressure on the cam. Easy enough to do. Once measured then take off what you need to give you the 0.005" float. I went for a measured float of 0.006" to take account of the gasket crush on final fit.

BTW not that I'm not trusting. While you've got the rocker shafts off check that they are round the right way. There is a mark on one end of each rocker shaft which must be in the right place to align the oil holes. There are pics in the manual. Very easy to get wrong.
 
Thanks for the help guys. Will get pics up tomorrow of the oil pump parts. Have a feeling the oil pump may have been replaced at some time. Cover doesn't seem that worn. Gears fit better than the new ones.

However I'm not going to be taking the inlet off any time soon :(

Will check out those rocker shafts though, and will make my best job of the camshaft tomorrow aswell.

I have to say it looked pretty clean in there for knckerd engine that old mate, was the water from the jetwash?

I wonder about fitting that adjuster to mine if the pressure is too high, I cant remeber if its a longer or short vlave to give more pressure :doh:

Amen to that Fett - I was impressed with how clean the rocker assembly looked as far as varnish is concerned.

Wolf, I had of course cleaned the rocker areas out a couple of years ago, they were at the time packed solid with sludge, couldn't see the valves when I took the covers off!

Also regards the release valve, I have the high pressure spring but the new valve cap supplied again does not fit as well in the housing!

Will get pics of all that oil stuff up soon for JM to inspect! :)

I don't know about anyone else but I would have to say I am turning a little green with envy - wishing that freshly painted engine were mine! Those rockers and plenum chamber/throttle body housing look top notch!
