Thank you Saint.V8. I did notice that you have the V8 petrol, but did think that the job was very similar.

Holidaychicken... I did get the fence sprayer, I think its exactly the same one that Saint used. £6.99 from B&M :) i just need to source the hose to attach to it.

I am downloading the RAVE service manual right now. I am also looking into the Allcooms and will be purchasing one from RSW in the next few weeks.

I'll dig my sprayer out tonight, I just removed the nozzle I think and cable tied a short length of garden hose on the end, it's a wet world of pain without the sprayer.
You will only be able to remove around 4 litres but it will give you a good idea what's going on and then you can repeat the process which will increase the concentration of new fluid as the only other way is a pressure fill and flush.
I would definitely be checking the lower section of your rad to make sure that's clear which if I am right you can test by removing the rad drain plug but one thing at a time as you will need to follow the bleed procedure for the cooling system.
You may find the car hadn't been used during the unusually hot weather so has never raised its head with the original owner and if I recall correctly it came from Scotland and they don't have sunshine up there.
Andy

So a garden hose will fit? I thought i needed a smaller size hose.

Do you think that I can use a compressor to pressure flush it and fill it?

Today the plan is to fit one of those tapes to try and fix the dashboard pixels to know what the actual messages are. Then I will move onto the gearbox oil cooler, as i think that the other day, i worked on the wrong cooler, (a very small radiator) seating on the top left under the bonnet. I found out that the GB oil cooler is right next to the oil filter on this engine.

After i service the gearbox and depending on what I find in there, i will flush the the radiator next.

Andy.... A fecking garden hose....really???

What size is your fence sprayer?? I used something considerably smaller than a garden hose.....fabric coated fuel hose I think I used as it was what I had at the time!

It is a proper man's sprayer of his own design. Mounted on the back is a Rolls Royce Olympus engine and it can empty an Olympic sized swimming pool in under a minute. The last fence panel he sprayed was knocked back so hard it took out a row of fishermen's cottages.

Calm down dears !!
Excuse me while I whip this out (you can google that yourself)
and that fits very nicely into the fill hole.
Make sure you can get the filler plug out before draining it !!

I am going to say no, never tried it but the garage will pump in fluid I would guess, i don'rt think connecting an air compressor is going to end well, use Saint's method, it will tell you what you need to know, keep us posted:)

Oh I see now....

I too that bit off and push the hose over the yellow part....think it is in my how to .....

And no need to Goooooogle that.....who can ever forgot such an epic piece of cinematography.....and its Headley....!!!

I was going to do that but the angle helped out a bit, i think it was just the actual sprayer nozzle bit i took off which left a plain bore, either way will do of course

Oh and yes one of the best films of all time, candy gram for mongo !!

Thanks for the pictures holidaychicken!

Finally managed to sort out the OBCs pixels and what the Stop message actually says is: "STOPW 0.0 SEC" any ideas? Is that like Stop watch for the trip computer or something?

Yes, that is a stop watch function....

If you press the end of the left hand indicator stalk, it will scroll through the on board computer readouts of MPG, Range, Average Speed, Time, Date, Aux Vent 1 Aux Vent 2 etc....one of those is a stopwatch.

Yep, you set it to 5000 which is £5000 and it will slowly count down to zero at which point you either have to stop repairing it and just drive it regardless or sell it for spares or repairs:(

you have a list somewhere of the hidden menu options don't you mate ?

Well at least it wasnt the stop engine one!!

I will see if i have time to play with it tomorrow. I also found that it has a working phone in the armrest. I knew it had the phone, but no idea it was working.

No, I don't have the list of the hidden menu options yet.

I am more worried about making sure its safe to drive it at the moment, as the mrs is taking it with the kids to the Isle of Wight on Wednesday and I don't want it to fail on them. Fingers crossed.

Sorry I meant Saint has a hidden menu list, as you say at least you can read what it is telling you now.
When you get around to driving onto your sleepers I use low ratio so it crawls up onto them nice and slowly

Press and hold the Check Control button in the instrument cluster (RIGHT button), with the ignition key in either the first position or with engine running.
  • You will first see "Check Control OK", some seconds later you will see "Test Nr.01"
  • Push the left button on the instrument cluster to see the car's identification number. Add the 5 digits (not 6) together and write down that number, you will need it for unlocking all the functions. Example: A123457 will lead to 2+3+4+5+7 = 21
  • Push the right button until you see "Test Nr.19"
  • Push left button until you see the number that is equal to the one you calculated above
  • Push right button again
1. Display Car's identification number, HW/SW version, construction date
2. instrument cluster self test. Will light up all lights and run all guages
3. Current consumption (liters/hour)
4. Average consumption (liters/100 km)
5. Current range
6. Remaining fuel in tank. Three sets of numbers: A/B/C. C=total amount.
7. Engine RPM / Coolant Temp (C)
8. Current Speed (kph)
9. System voltage at Term. "R" (Battery Voltage)
10. Country/Language (UK, US, Spa, Ger, Jap, etc.)
11. Units am/pm
12. Average Speed
13. ETA
14. Date of Software Mask
15. Production Diagnosis
16. ""
17. Display Vehicle Specific Data
18. Alarm Changeover (cont. vs. intermittent OBC chime)
19. Lock/Unlock
20. Correction factor for fuel consumption (nicht ändern!)
21. Reset all defect codes

Thank you Saint.

A bit of an update. The Mrs took the RR to the Isle of Wight today (I still haven't done the GB service) and the ding with the message "Trans Failsafe Prog" popped up about 3-4 times on her nearly 2 hour journey. She mentioned that it started when she got stucked in heavy traffic and moving fast for 2mns and then stopping. I did advised her to stop as soon as she could, turn everything off and give it 15mns or so. She did it and managed to get there, but now I am worried that it might be something worst than just an overheating problem.

I am joining her tomorrow and I will be taking the oil and filter with me as I was quoted £60 for the labour at a local garage, which I will have to get done, as I think the drive back will be a good opportunity to see if it made any difference.

I am also thinking (depending on what I find on the GB pan) contemplating the transfer box, as previously advised, or even a refurb gb job.

Any advise please?

The Transfer Box shift motor potentiometer (spelling) can cause TRANS FAILSAFE PROG to be displayed....need to get it on a decent set of LR specific diagnostics to query the Box and the Transfer Box ECUs.....I am still not convinced that a 5th Gear problem would be mentioned in the Transfer Box ECU as it doesn't care if the box has a 5th gear or not

The guy from JB-transmissions in Leyton has offered to have a look with diagnostics machine and also to do the GB service for £30 (me providing the oil and filter obviously) to see what he finds in the gb pan.

I think that, that is my best option for the time being.
