Well, spoke to garage owner who MOT'd my discovery 1 1998 premium and the amount of money (even at mates rates) and time needed to repair the chassis would be astronomical...could easily buy a new galvanised chassis to put it one way!

Everything else is fine so I'll either offer it on for sale on here or break it up - not sure yet.

Bit of a pain seeming as Ive only had it a few months! Oh well, s**t happens.

first break down what needs doing, it may sound loads but learn to weld (if you want to keep landys you need to)use this one to learn on ?often when seperated jobs aint to bad, just looks it on fail sheet!!

Well, I'm not an expert at welding - done bits of mig welding. But the chap who was working on my car (personal friend of the family for years, so no trust issues etc) said that after welding on a new patch he had to keep cutting away because you have to weld on clean metal...something along those lines. He's got it up on the lift and will show me what he's on about - I'll post about what he says tomorrow :)
If I am breaking it up, you're right, could be a good time to get some welding practice in...though I'd need to buy a welder and I have noooo idea about which one to get :p

Bencorkill its a 300tdi

Albert I paid £1100 for it...searching for some welding threads as we speak! Quite a few good images of welding jobs people have done :)
slight ouch . at this point sugest work out what it`s worth all done , against what it will break for . Unless it has some realy good bits you may strugle to recoupe money spent

sold my rusted out 200tdi disco on fleabay...got over 600 for it... engine is going into a fender aparently, add on the grand estimate for the welding and its a good wedge to look for a replacement .....the wifes picasso seems ok so far in our snow

By rebuilding do you mean completely new chassis? The current one is really dickered, a new chassis is the only option as far as that's concerned :/
why not if you need a landy?

its best to start with a cheap donor and strip it down .you could have a good wagon for around 3.5k which m,ay serve you well,

I saved a defender a few years back and its just on consumables now,
ushal stuff but it works hard ,

do the front axle rebuild and get a galvo chassis, the rest is fairly easy,

you will need a good welder and cutting tools for the body, replace the boot floor with alloy etc....i a a sheet off a warehouse building in my old classic floor,

it can be done cheap and be worth it.Labour is wots gunna kill ya at a garage cos it takes a lifetime lol..:D

before you start a refurb just make a sensible estimate of the time it will take, then double it and be realistic about whether you have the time to commit to it., same with the costings.
whilst anything is physically possible if you have the time , money and skills its not the right solution for everyone

dont ferget you will need welder ,grinder, etc and not least somewhere to work and store stuff

...

@Thanks for linking the thread JohnyP...that's tonight's reading sorted!

@ricc My front garden is where I'll be working and I'll have to buy a welder >< and working in an engineering firm I can tell you that most projects end up like that...double to time and cost!

Whilst it's up in the air on the lift at the garage I'll get photos and post 'em up.

Cheers guys!
