Reverse not engaging

might just be clutch b only needs bell housing and pump housing removing to check ,plus ensure any oil residue in another box is red if you get one

Clutch B is used for forward gears and they all work. Only clutch that is exclusive to reverse is D, it would be my guess that is the one that has failed.

why not bung your gearbox into the specialist in stockton might work out cheaper in the long run might be worth checking into

It could be a cheap fit from a specialist. You don't know what is wrong. Just grasping at straws you are. had a transimission fooking up and thought 3-4k for repairs took it to the ford dealer and was a speed sensor in the abs. under $200 for the fix

Don't think not engaging reverse is a speed sensor John. It's going to be a few bob which ever way he jumps.

Was a example of .......... I thought my trans was fooked, so took it to ford as it was hammering hard on each shift. They hooked it to computer and up shows speed sensor bad. He think his trans is fooked maybe, maybe not could be a simple part, If you don't know for sure( know your limitations) take it to someone that knows what they are doing

Yes i know it was John. But i doubt this lads problem is something that simple. If it engages and just about moves something has given up simple as that. If he has no diagnostic faults (which is something we don't yet know) it is mechanical and needs a strip to sort out.

I dont have a fault code reader so i can not check for ecu fault log but i am going to chsnge the box snd cross my fingers

yeah that what i think hence my thinking of changing the gearbox but a mechanic friend keeps saying it could be that but it shows the correct gear on dash

The main clutches A and B are engaged manually. All other clutches are engaged electronically according to position of XYZ switch. Look at RAVE for clutches used for various selected positions. 1, 2, 3, D and reverse. Power flow is shown for each gear. The only clutch that is exclusively used for reverse is clutch 8 on the RAVE diagrams. Which i believe others would refer to as clutch D. If all the forward gears are functional then the only clutch that could have failed to give you no reverse is clutch 8 in the RAVE diagrams.

At a guess would you have a rough idea of cost to replace clutch d?

Not a clue. You can get internal repair kits from Ashcrofts i believe. But you really need to know what you are about before attempting to strip and rebuild one of these. It is not an Haynes one spanner job.

Yeah i realise how much of a job it will be as i have spoke to a auto transmission specialist. They charge £150 to strip and identify problem and then it costs another £150 you want it rebuilding without repair

Looks like you have a decision to make then. People don't work for nothing.

Yeah i know that but i didnt think there was that much work involved. Well i have bought a gearbox and off to pick it up soon.
Really need datatek to answer my message so i can get started with changing the box

You have bought a 24 i suppose. You didn't listen then.
