HELP... Im about to buy a reconditioned VCU for my 2000 Freelander, currently prop removed.. long story short, noises led us to believe faulty VCU so removed prop, drove car away from garage and gearbox failed, lost all drive. . Had 2nd hand gearbox fitted, garage looked at IRD said looked ok... Question if VCU was U>S and gearbox failed is it possible IRD is ok? I am worried about putting recon VCU on if IRD faulty, what will happen if IRD is dodgy, will VCU fail and also gearbox again.. DO I get an IRD as well ? not long after gearbox fitted a clunking rattling sound has started underneath.. Does it when you turn over engine and you can hear it knocking at slow speeds, got exhaust checked not loose, engine mounting bolts ok, is it gearbox or IRD, got oil leak started as well, garage said its the 2nd hand gearbox, HELP, what so I so, had the girl 10 years now 2nd owner, so dont say scrap her :)

I'm assuming that because it's a 2000MY that the gearbox is a PG1? The PG1 box is generally very robust. However there is a weakness in the output splined link to the left hand front wheel. These can and do fail normally the failure can't be detected as the drive is taken by the rear wheels until the props are removed. I can't say if the IRD is ok without looking at it. The clunk could be the lower engine tie bar gone soft. All you can do is fit a quality recon VCU and give it a go. Or strip the IRD for inspection. Having the IRD or gearbox fail shouldn't damage recon VCU.
Bell are well used and respected for the quality of there recon VCUs for reasonable money.
