rear sub frame passenger side rotted all the way through mot fail

Dropped the sub frame down its on the rear passenger side its rotted all the way round the rear tube just before where the bolt goes in, once it was dropped the above metal is fine. Its very odd i was expecting to find allsorts of nightmares thinking maybe it would be water coming down from boot, but no its just rusted all the way through almost like its been cutoff and even the metal is fine on the end. Its having a box welded around it now and back to the station apart from that no advisories and its 20 years old now

Anyone else had anything like this. And also do you think its worth me putting a whole new sub frame in im wondering if its worth it as apart from there its really solid. 220k miles not sure im better the devil i know, the station smashed the **** out of it once he found it with the hammer and everyone is really suprised its only that bit and not anywhere else.

If the rest if it's ok, leave alone. Just get it covered in rust protection of your choice. I still use waxoyle (old school) but there are better alternatives.

cheers mike got some of that il give it a wire brush and waxoil it. I saw how much is connected to it. Big job that would be to swap one out all the ones for sale look rusty as ****

There was a problem with the rear chassis leg cracking on early models. Also the captive nut would come oft, which holds the sub frame in place with the bolt. It is unusual for yer problem to happen to a Freelander. I can't remember coming across it before. I wonder if it had any of these problems repaired many years ago and not fully rust protected after.

I looked it up on gov check mot site.
It failed mot three years ago on that so perhaps it was bodged.

To fix the captive nut problem yer cut a hole int boot floor to get to the nut. Is there any cut's or weld's/patches int boot floor, visible from the top? Just wondering.
