What is the best prime and paint that you have tried for the rear crossmember?

Mine is flaking off in chunks and I plan to give it a scraping with a radial wire brush and re-paint it.
There used to be a metal primer called Red Lead that was incredible, unfortunately it is no longer on the market.

Thanks.

Looking good!

Hammerite spray paint is GARBAGE!!!

The rust is already showing through the crossmember FFS!

Im going to re-do it with proppa prime and paint...............:mad::mad:

If its not cleaned properly the rust will come straight through.

I Have a similar problem with the disco on the rear wheel arch and a little surface rust, cleaned with a sanding block and sprayed over but it came straight back through. Next time I will be using a wire brush and doing the job properly.

Ah take it ye didn't use red oxide and paint like ah suggested natas?
Ye might find that the rust might be comin' through from behind... i.e, the channel between the inner and outer skin of the xmember...

Wire brush/sand paper flapwheel on a drill/angle grinder then a couple of layers of red oxide primer (one with a high zinc content helps) leave it till it's touch dry then a few layers of hammerite. I use the brush on stuff, put it on nice and thick and work it into all the nooks an crannys. The brush marks seem to dissappear once the paint dries too. :D

Gonna try find some zinc paint this weekend.

Can I get a proppa job done with the crossmember still mounted?

On second thought.

I just spoke to a really good welder,(not many on the island) he has agreed to have a look at the xmember tomorrow afternoon and give me a quote on patching it up.

Then I will paint it proppa.:)
