Rear axle out of alignment (polybush replacement time?)

hmm... very tempting indeed... but I'm a paranoid son of a ...... and I can't help thinking "what if these don't have the same tensile strength etc...". nothing may have happened yet, but maybe they're not had the right amount of stress at the right moment, if you know what i mean...

I know a suitable response to that statement would be "well just buy the genuine ones then!", but at that price? is that really a normal price for genuine nuts & bolts of that type?

bushes are bought. nuts and bolts are not yet. still need to work out if over £40 is a sensible amount for these genuine parts. I plan to compare part numbers with my local independant Landy dealer, but haven't had time yet. Also, he hates dealing with customers, but if he's significantly cheaper, then he'll get my business, sadly.

It's also booked in mid-January to have it done. I've given up on trying to get the nuts undone. I need to buy a blow torch, some metric spanners, etc, etc, etc... before these jobs become truly "simple".

Shame really... this (and the spotlight re-wiring, which a friend has just agreed to help me with) are the only outstanding things I need to sort out as far as i know!

If nuts don't undo then grind the fookers off, cheap enoughto replace with new non gen which should be better than putting old **** back on.

Ah said that earlier on Gratch;) Shame he might spoil that waxoyl treatment he's just had done now:doh:;)

Yep, just thort he might need someone else to tell him:D

£40 fer new bolts he's quibblin aboot, yet he's booked it in at a garage an gonna get a noo arsehole ripped fer hisself on labour charge:confused::confused::confused:;):D

Aye, there's just nae tellin' some folk.... and that's on top o' the £500 notes he's just spent!!;):D:D

Ok, I see where this is going... :D

The Waxoyl treatment could be considered a Christmas present, kind of, and I'm only booking it in for the bushes, because I simply cannot get the nuts off. I could buy a blow torch, an angle grinder, etc, etc, but it'd be cheaper to let my garage do it!

And as for the Waxoyl job, I witnessed the whole thing being done and bought an aerosol Waxoyl Professional while I was there, so I can touch it up again afterwards, and when I scrape it off road!

I think you are saying that £40 on nuts & bolts should be nothing compared to a Waxoyl job, and it isn't, but I still don't want to waste money generally. I see the Waxoyl treatment as money well spent, and I've begrudgingly booked it into the garage because I'm out of other options!

Hope I've put some sort of valid case across...

I think my previous post (written just as I woke up this morning!) does make sense.

The thing is, basically, I don't see that I had any choice over the Waxoyl. I decided that I definitely wanted it done, and decided that I could not do it myself. I therefore turned it into a bit of a Christmas present and went for it. Having also bought the aerosol, I can redo the bits ruined by the bush replacement.

As for not wanting to spend £40 on nuts and bolts having just willingly spent £500 on a Waxoyl and about to spend however much on labour to have the bushes replaced, I know that seems ridiculous.

The cost of an angle grinder, blow torch and a set of metric spanners far outweighs the cost of getting my local garage to just do the bush replacement, and while it's a much better investment to go buy the angle grinder, blow torch etc... I cannot justify the expense.

The £500 for Waxoyl came from a different "budget" if you like - not my regular bank account.

Hope this still makes sense!

(Don't read this as a bitchy post either, please... not meant to be that way, of course! :D)

Sorry to hijack the thread! Ive had my tracking done a few times and each ime it still feels like i'm driving a boat! the steering wheel is never straight either. Could this be due to the rear axle being out and fixed by bushes?

could be. i take mine to STS Tyre pros - they do "geometry", not just wheel alignment. This checks every single dimension you can think of, hence why I know my back axle is out of alignment.

Feeling like you are driving a boat is normal for a Landy, but steering wheel never being level is most likely your rear axle being misaligned, I would think...

There could be several reasons for the axle being out of alignment - worn bushes, bent trailing arm, possibly other things too. It might not be your rear axle alignment at all though.

Probably best to start a new topic and get lots of opinions on it, i would think! :D

Hi mate.

We had Defender many years ago that didnt drive straight. The main agent couldnt get to the bottom of it.

In the end we packed behind the bush on the body mount, and that straightened it up.

You might end up getting your nickers in a twist if you put a Landrover through four wheel alignment, as they rarely run straight.

nice to see you briefly in Tesco car park today, by the way, Del!

would have driven over to actually say "Hello", but we were in a bit of a rush, sadly!

You dont want your nice clean motor next to my filthy thing.

If I can get 5 mins over the weekend, do you want me to have a look under your it ?.

Are you referring to the bushes, Del? If so, i'd be very grateful for someone to have a look underneath it for me and maybe lend me a spanner or two, or help to get things undone!

It's just been Waxoyl'd, but I have bought a tin of Waxoyl aerosol to redo the areas that are wrecked by the pending bush replacement.

I've also not ordered the replacement nuts and bolts yet, but the old ones could go back on in the mean time if I/we get it done!
