Going well, jl services have got hub bolts in stock so plan is pick a couple up on way home and get some 8mm fuel line for the gearbox breather. Sort it out tonight then it's just the intercooler bottom hose and tailgate at my leisure. Then enjoy it and not worry about it going wrong until it does :)

Good to hear ur making progress

By the way ref intercooler hoses, if u ever decide to fit them I took the time to measure the clamp sizes

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/turb...-clip-size-info-157268.html?highlight=T+bolts

Where the pipes clamp onto the intercooler really need jubilee clips as the pipes are elongated

Also info regarding the front diff modification, as if the breather blocks it can blow the oil seals in The front diff

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic92210.html?highlight=front+diff+breather

I extended mine round to the spare battery tray so was well out of the way , u can see it in the right hand side of the brake master cyl

Also the pipes on the right are the modified brake recal, have they been done on urs as Beadles my local dealer done the recall free of charge , it’s a recall when oil ends up in the brake servo, my servo, master cyl and modified brake breather pipe was replaced FOC

Hope it helps and indeed plse let us know how things are going

Cheers @gstuart, I'll have look over that breather and brake fluid tomorrow.

It's all back together now, sorted gearbox breather

It's a bit heath Robinson but whoever did the clutch must've removed the breather cuz there's nothing there at all. I dropped a length of 8mm internal diameter fuel hose down the side of the engine and pushed it on the g/box pipe. Added the bottle so I can monitor how much oil it's making.

Wheel bearing noise is gone but I can hear a new one now, like a whubwhubwhub. A rotational rub, not quite a grind on nearside front.

Almost constant but more at c25mph. It can change pitch when turning either way but not all the time. Still there at A road speeds. If i left foot brake slightly it doesnt affect it either.

Slow speeds on full lock it doesn't seem to happen.

Hope it aint the diff

Edit oh and the handbrake threw a hissy fit earlier. Drove to shops , parked up waiting for the missus, handbrake on. Fuelled up, handbrake on no issues. Got home and parked on drive, nose up on an incline. Handbrake on, horrific grinding noise and Amber warning light, message in dash and beeping. Turned off, got out and locked car then got back in a started up.

Went and did the xyz reset but didn't get any beeps and gear numbers all on dash straight away. Back home tried the handbrake a few times and it's fine! All I can think is I've disturbed a bit of shìt in the drum or something or it didn't like being jacked up.

Edit 2

Looks like I've got the old diff breather

And here's my brake fluid set up Gary. I'll get a better pic tomorrow, just realised you need to see side of engine cover

Hi @1988smithy

Thks for the pics, always makes it so much easier actually seeing the faults, lol

Wonder if ur gearbox oil has been overfilled causing the overflow , but of course know as the gearbox warms up the oil expands

Indeed ref the old diff breather , have u done all the oils yet for the diffs, plus not telling u how to suck eggs, the diff oil has to be measured out, u don’t use the filler plugs as a level for oil

Those diff breathers can block up and cause oil leaks because of excess pressure and blow oil seals in the diff

Ref the handbrake , if u hear a screech when applied don’t use it until adjusted , that brake guide shows how it’s done

Front wheel noise may be a calliper Carrier so as the wheel goes round it touches the disc and off again, just check the carrier is free

Another test , put the vehicle into access suspension height , grab the top of the tyre and rock it back and forth , see if there’s any movement

Sounds like the reset was ok seeing the numbers appear straight away

Always enjoy following projects , even better seeing a D3 being done

When I’m back on my feet will start a thread on the D3 mods

Ps, before I forget , see that black box next to the brake master cyl, has a wire plugged into it, if u disconnect it the alarm will then use the horn so a lot louder , then just tape up the connector , can remove the braket that fixes it in place

Did think that about gearbox overfill so gonna keep an eye on my high tech breather system for a bit ;)

I'll fit new diff breather but oils will have to wait, I'll just run the car for a bit before i get too deep financially. Front diff was replaced by p.o so that oil will be ok for time being

Just looked at the epb adjustment in the guide, looks fun! I'll do that next time we've been away in caravan, I can put it to one side so landy can go on flat bit of drive.

R.e caliper carrier, would that be the slider pins seized up or something else?

Ill do access height check tomorrow :)

I love the d3 but I'm going to take it slow, if it gives me a massive issue early on I'll get rid and buy another. Softly softly catchee monkey, don't want to blow a load on it early doors ;)

Hiya

Indeed the slider pins and agree with taking it slowly whilst going through it so no big red flags come up

Thought the high tech breather system was brilliant, lol

Indeed that front breather doesn’t take too long to fit

Alas previous owners don’t always do the req maintenance so they become money pits , alas when I bought mine it was in a right mess but knew what I was going into , along with paying peanuts for it as the garage just wanted shot of it, am very pleased with it now , maybe one day might go onto a D4 , but early days yet

Keep the piccies coming plse, enjoying the thread

Test fitted me towing mirrors, only ever jury-rigged them with cable ties on the defender  checked tow bar electrics work, all good but one front sidelight on disco doesn't work unless you smack the light unit! Full set of new bulbs I think as no reverse lights either. First tow of the van this weekend :D 1450kg wonder if it'll cope..:p

Checked and cleaned MAP sensor, it didn't really need it which was nice.

Wonder if EGR is already blanked? The pipes are still all there, can't really make out any plates between pipes and what not. First thumbnail, pipe on the right is a bit shìtty with oil/carbon.

20190305_161959.jpg
Can just make out exhaust end of EGR pipe, I don't think there's a blank there is there?
20190305_162227.jpg

Seen worse bays, a lot worse. Defender was filthy ;) mad how much those plastic covers hide.
20190305_162118.jpg

Fluids nice colours, no contamination
20190305_162142.jpg

And @gstuart , my brake recall was hiding under the engine cover :)

Anyone see anything to worry about in these pics I've missed?

@1988smithy

Looking good there mate, MAP sensor nice and clean, great you’ve had the brake vaccum mod already done

My EGRS were fine but when I removed my MAP sensor is was really dirty which made me decide to blank them

Always worth removing the throttle body as it really gets dirty inside there when the EGRS went blanked

Can’t see anything untoward from the pics , are u back on the road yet and grinning again, lol

Plse as always don’t hesitate to ask any questions as plenty of help as the D3 clan grows in numbers :)

Yes mate back on the road yesterday, wafted to work and back today like a pig in s...ugar ;) love the noise it makes when you give it some, like an aircraft :D

Was happy when I saw brake vacuum done

I need to read all your posts in this thread and put a list together and just go through the whole car! :)

Remember that noise I mentioned yesterday? It's definitely 30mph and above, is worse if you pull off quickly and can be felt thru the wheel a little under heavy load. Also gets worse when you turn slight left at speed. Driveshaft/CV joint? I'll get it jacked up again next week and have a look

Looking very sweet mate noticed ya new profile pic too. Ps got a new seal of a bloke off era recommendation buy nelly. Only problem now is I was reading your posts and it was mentioned about about the torque setting for wheel hub at 480ish o_O this sort of backers me up for drive way fix as my little wrench only torques to 30nm lmao

Could maybe hire one? Try HSS or similar.

Gonna tackle it yourself then? :)

Read the PM's.......LOL.

Cheers

I'm intrigued now

Edit!

Do you just undo the 4 hub bolts and pull the shaft out with the hub?

helps if you undo the caliper and holder a well...do not forget the ABS sensor. Might be a bitmore of a pain putting the halfshaft back in with CV and hub attached, but saves messign with the big nut if you aint got a torque wrench or bar.

Cheers
