Hi, I have just bought my first range rover , its a 1990 3.9 V8.

It has a funny problem (among many others) in that there seems to be coolant dripping from the gearbox.

Its not leaking much at all ( anout an inch a week in the tank)but it is definatly coolant and dripping down from the autobox. It is 100% coolant with antifreeze

I am guessing it is running down from somewhere else but cannot see where.

Is this common problem and where is it coming from?

Many thanks

John

Could also be from the inlet manifold valley gasket. Remove the plenum chamber which will give improved access and check that there is no coolant sitting on top of the valley gasket. The action of the cooling fan tends to blow any liquid towards the back of the engine.

if the valley has gone, you will see drops of water on the dipstick, run a 9/16 spanner round the inlet manifold bolts ans see if they tighten. i have had that before, and just a slight tighten can make all the difference and a water leak additive like k- seal. but if its not the inlet or the heater hoses then it could very well be a core plug in that nasty area.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I have been crawling around under there and I think it might be coming from the back core plug on the side with the starter motor, which looks quite corroded.

I am hoping to get it onto a ramp soon to have a better look!

John
