.the only other thing i,ve noticed is there signs of diesel leakage at the base of one of the injectors, could this be letting air in.thanks again craig

Faulty leak off pipe, it will allow air into the fuel line causing starting probs sometimes. Replace them all with silicone tube 3.2mm I think, find it on Ebay.:D

cheers datatek, but all leak off pipes changed, this diesel puddle is right at the base of the injector.

Why would running on red diesel harm your filters? Apart from the individual fuel suppliers addatives, it is exactly the same as white diesel excepting for the red dye.

the tank gets stained and a film develops if theres injector cleaner added to ur fuel it brakes down the film and blocks the pipes and filter

You said there was a pool of diesel at the base of the injector, if it's the number 4 injector, they are known to leak I believe where the plastic and metal join.
no mate, its the injector neareset the front of the car, could a loosely tightened injector cause such a problem,if coolant temp is disconneted will it throw up any hard fault, bcem or any other fault which is going to severly make my head explode:)

That is more likely than not the spill pipe leaking.

right lads, spill pipes changed, new g/plugs,no air bubbles so i,m thinking electrical so i,ve disconnected the coolant temp sensor hey presto starts up after first glow plug cycle BUT i,ve drove it a couple of hundred metres and it won,t change gear?is the coolant temp sensor/gear change related?strange.

Some people have noted that a badly fitted Hot start fix can cause these symptoms. Don't see how but it seems related.

I do not know for sure on the P38, but on some cars the Auto box change pattern is affected by the engine temperature sensor. When the engine is cold the shift points change. Could be that is why the hot start fix and the temp sensor affect the auto box.

Maybe he should fit a new sensor and see what that does.

cheers lads, thanks to you good people and your expertize i,ve done the "flow test"and i,m getting 180ml in 10secs:)good fuel pump.i,m gonna change the coolant temp sensor, can this be done without draining the system-if i,m quick i should,nt loose too much coolant, well thats my way of thinking?if its not the c/temp-s any other ideas and quick checks i can carry out?thanks again craig
