ok,it sounds like the diesel pump is worn,when it is cold the pump contracts and can get enough pressure up,when it is hot it expands and loses pressure therefore not able to pump enough fuel through at the required pressure.you can buy a kit of ebay which fools the ecu into thinking the pump is cold,just like putting the glow plugs on when engine is cold.
 
i was about to ask what sort of a job is it removing fuel tank but after reading the last few comments i thought i was some other fookers thread:Dthread hyjacking is what i think its called.
 
today lads i,ve cracked open the non return valve between filter and fip.i have a good flow of fuel when the in tank fuel pump cycles,so i presume the pump is ok.i started the car ran it for a few secs,stopped the car and straight away clamped the fuel feed hose to stop any return to the tank.tried to start her and nothin:(i,m starting to think i,ve got a dodgy no4 injector sensor,or fip?cant be g/plugs because problem is there even with a warm engine?lads this problem is doin my head in.i only bought the rr has a get around whilst i,m doin my disco up,that was 3 months ago,i havent touched the disco because every weekend i,m fooking about with this bag of s**t:mad:
 
I suppose the cranking speed is good? Could be the starter motor, outside shot but they have been known to cause starting problems if the cranking speed is too slow on diesels.
When it won't start have you got diesel under pressure at the injectors if you crack one open whilst cranking?

What's yer mileage ? My reason for asking is that mine (97DSE) was a bad starter ( Minimum 3 rounds of the glowplugs before even trying) : I am just in the process of replacing the tank fuel pump : have had old one out, messed around with it and put back awaiting new pump. Suddenly she's starting first time !
I have read that the bushes in the pump motor and the nylon gears start to wear and are said to have a 100k type life. It looks as if mine has been failing for some time ( 150k) and finally gave out on me.

cheers lads the mileage is 106000,i too have to cycle the plugs 3 times but then fires,don,t know about the fuel pump all i know is the pumps cycling and theres diesel pumping out the feed pipe after the filter and at the injector unions if cracked open.i thought about the starter because the terminals are badly corroded but would,nt this effect startup whether you cycle the plugs 1 or 3 times?what about coolant temp sensor?
 
this might not help u much but i used to have a p38 that someone kindly ran on red. that caused me endless problems with fuel filters but as result the fuel pump in my tank starved the engine and had same lazy start and lack of power. i bught pump off ebay flushed tank and replaced filter and pump prob sorted. anyway gd luck mike.

Starter motor can definately cause your problem, just had the same thing on my tractor LOL. Start first time cold but not when hot. Bad connections inside the solenoid were the cause, but I also did the bearings. Turns over a lot faster and starts first time hot or cold now:D

Why would running on red diesel harm your filters? Apart from the individual fuel suppliers addatives, it is exactly the same as white diesel excepting for the red dye.

I run my excavator and tractor etc on red diesel no problem, I also used it on my boat.
As Wammers say's the only diference is red dye.
It does stain the pipes though and if you get stopped by plod and they see the clear plastic pipe from the filter is stained red you will be in trouble:eek:
 
cheers lads,i know the previous owner ran it on bio-diesel but that was months ago,the colour fuel coming out now is **** yellow,the sort of yellow you get the day after drinking too many stella,s.once i,ve got my eka code sorted i,m goin to clean up the s/motor connections see if that gets me anywhere,also if i have a suspect coolant temp sensor will the car start with it disconnected.the only other thing i,ve noticed is there signs of diesel leakage at the base of one of the injectors,could this be letting air in.thanks again craig
