Radio in the freezer??

are you saying that radios were code protected back in the early 80s ?

Yep. 1982 I remember trying to impress a girl by installing a very fancy Nakamichi auto-reverse cassette deck in her Mazda RX7. It wouldn't just flip the paying head around, it would spit out the cassette, twirl it in mid air and then swallow it again. All done and I was left with an actual key, like a yale key in the bottom of the box and a radio that wouldn't work. Eventually dawned on me key might have something to do with it and looked around for where to slot it in for the next 5 minutes. Then I finally saw tiny engraved numbers on the key, just like a serial number any key might have, punched that in on the preset buttons and shazam! (see that, 80' cartoon reference cleverly worked in :) )
