Hi Guys

I just bought a generic electric fan for my defender 200 from bolt on bits and was wondering if anybody had any experience in fitting these, any advice or especially any pics of how it secures to the Rad would be much appreciated.

My fan was large enough for the top and bottom mounting lugs to be mounted straight to the top and bottom lips of the rad mount frame
Hope pic helps
I should add to drill the frame take the top off 4 bolts and for the bottom lift the rad up and inch as you dont want the drill to slip into the bottom tank!

Was that one of the 16 inch fans?

I use a 14-inch Pacet on my 300TDi.
I welded four studs to the top & bottom frames and then bolted the fan onto two short lengths of angled alloy strip. That way the whole assembly can be removed by removing four nuts and undoing the connector.

Totally dislike the idea of using zip-ties as even with the supplied soft clamps there is still contact with the fins and while that may be fine on a decent rad I can't believe they are good for one past its first flush of youth.
In addition they make removing the rad not possible without first obtaining new ties to refit it (they are special pull-through ties on the Pacet) whereas using studs means that the fan can be removed & refitted at will.

Thanks Lynall the pic helps a lot will try that first before having to resort to something more complex like Litch's idea.

Anybody got any hints on how best to get the rad cowl out without dismantling the front end, barring a better idea from someone was thinking of just cutting it out?

Does it not just lift out like on the 300TDi?
Remove the viscous fan, undo the two retaining nuts, unclip the bottom hose, give it a twist (it is plastic after all) and out she comes. Is the 200TDi setup different?

Nothing complex about my mountings, made it up in about 30-minutes.
With a 14-inch fan there was a significant gap between top & bottom frames so a simple bridge was required and I had plenty of the angle alloy strip to hand. I welded the bolts to the frame (just a couple of spots either side of the head) as it saves having to faff around with two spanners and the resultant risk of damaging the fins if one slips.
The result is a bracket which is about as simple as they come and as I say the whole setup can be removed in as long as it takes to undo four nuts (now nyloc's by the way, I took that photo when I was still testing it).

Litch its a full circular piece with the fan well inside it and doesnt move forward enough to lift it past the fan. May be able to move it back enough to get the fan off first but even then doesnt look like it will clear the pulleys

Can't help anymore i'm afraid. I am at a disadvantage here not knowing the exact layout of a 200TDi engine bay and not being able to find a decent photo on the web or in my books.
Is it the original setup or a retrofit, is the shroud steel or plastic, can you not get a viscous fan spanner in to undo & remove the fan?

Thought i'd post a pic of the fan now its fitted, just need to wire it now.

Old fan came out really easy was only finger tight and once I got the turbo pipe and the top rad hose off the cowl came out easier than expected.

To new fan said easy fit, easy fit my arse lol ended up welding some bolts to the rad surround seemed the easiest way.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Are the mounting bolts long enough:eek:

F**k me, what a clean engine, do you actualy use it?
Forgive my ignorance, but what is the reason in removing a viscuss fan that works perfectly and replacing it with an electric one?

If you remove the viscous first the plastic cowl twists and lifts out. Takes two minutes to remove. You will need a viscous spanner.

Out of interest what is wrong with the viscous setup?
