Pulled for going too slow on the motorway

Reminds me on the times I've traveled the M11and moving into the near side lane, you'll stuck when meeting a truck in that lane half a mile up the road, half a mile is only around 30 seconds away and less some of the time, even driving a high powered saloon car its very difficult to pull out to over take that truck.

Use to have something similar on my local motorways the M2 and M20 until they were upgraded with extra lanes but it back to normal now with HGVs hogging the two lanes plus the third some of the time.:(
I once spent nine miles window to window overtaking someone on the M1 one morning  I'd had to much red bull and was having a giggling fit and waving at him but he was staring ahead :p. I got bored in the end and pulled in behind him, I was loaded so I could catch him downhill but we were the same speed on the flat. :D

Any vehicle travelling unexpectedly slowly on the motorway is a hazard. I dont any more but i used to travel back along the M4 several nights a week at around 11pm or later. Needless to say i wasnt hanging around at that time of night. I would frequently come across people doing 40 or sometimes even less - often in a ford fiesta!

Last night, on a B road near home, i came across an idiot doing 25mph. There's a few bends, and i get dropping down to 40 on the bends, but then speed the feck up on the straights. Sadly there werent any suitable opportunities to overtake.

What some drivers clearly forget is that there are other people out there who dont have all day. Not all emergency responders are on blue lights. There might be people who are late for work, people driving someone to hospital, people trying to get to hospital to see a loved one before they pass away. Frankly, driving slower than necessary is antisocial and shows a complete lack of consideration for other road users. Putting your own cost savings over the fact that th eperson behind you might have somewhere to get to, is really quite selfish.

At the very least, people moving slowly should pull over at the first opportunity if they are holding someone up, and not keep pootling on mile after mile passing laybys and field gates blindly ignorant of the queue of cars behind them.

On the motorway there are of course chances to overtake. But forcing lorries out into lane 2 means other traffic has to move into lane 3, and will eventually cause congestion.

I would say I drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions. If i can safely drive at 60mph on a country road then i will drive at that speed. If it is unsafe to drive faster than 20mph then i'd stick to 20. On the motorway I rarely drive below 70 unless the conditions (eg heavy traffic, fog, rain, etc) dictate it.

Lorries are not FORCED into lane 2 by slower traffic in lane one. They can stay in lane one and reduce speed by a few miles per hour like I have to if I catch them up. And my landy is almost maxed out at 70mph

I think 45 is too slow for a M Way speed.

It is not your speed that is the problem as such, but the fact people get bored , and suddenly find themselves fast approaching a MUCH slower vehicle.

I do not think vehicles in this day and age should be doing less than 50

YOU Did ask for peoples thoughts.

Cheers

Yes of course but I was travelling at 50 most of the time, slowing a little to let hgv traffic on at junctions

I had been travelling at 50 for about four miles, copper said I dropped below 50 at times
I'm surprised you were pull over for this in isolation as you are, but was it? I usually pull into the near side to take the next slip off when I see the sign the turn off is a mile away, doing this I usually join a que of vehicles doing the same thing and slowing down below 50, and from behind there appears a ripple effect with traffic that doesn't want this turn off moving into the centre lane and so the occupants of the centre lane that are allowed to or can are moving in to the third lane happens all the time on my favourite motorway the M25.

Perhaps police should also give those driver of cars that join motorways or M standard A roads at 40mph, then take there time to reach the speed to match that of the existing traffic a copy of the Highway Code showing the purpose of "slip roads" .

If you drove at 50-55mph on a 70mph dual carriageway on your driving test you would fail for 'failing to make good progress'. Driving on a motorway in a slow moving Land Rover is irresponsible, use the A roads.

Bollocks is it....the limit is 70 mph on a motorway, I drive up to 30,000 miles a year in my daily car most of which is on motorways. The mean speed in the outside lane is probably 85-90mph - now that is more irresponsible because those drivers ‘choose’ to break the speed limit - not a driver driving flat out but stuck with the lorries due to lack of performance. If folks kept to the speed limits, the difference between inside lane speeds and those overtaking would unlikely to be more than 30-35 mph. At the correct speed there is plenty of time to make good judgement and safe manoevers.

I guess it was because I stuck at 50 even downhill, copper was VERY close up behind me, I think he was wanting me to push on a bit

I thought it had decreased , when I was on the road about 20 years ago, all the tech service guys cars showed an average of 52MPH for all roads over a month. ( We had to talk about something when having a beer at the end of the month). Ut that did include doing 85 to 90 MPH on all motorways.

Nowadays i do not see the same speed being utilised on Motorways on the \"outside" lane

Cheers

It could well be the motorways I mainly drive on....M3 South, M4 Newburyvto Bristol & M5. Some more London way are a little slower due to cams :)

It's true. It's called "failure to make progress". Section 20 in the link below.

So you're saying it's ok for trucks to travel at 50 or 52 mph but not a land rover ?
No. A truck travelling at 52mph is very near their max permitted speed ont motorway. You traveling at that speed are much slower than what yer permitted to do, if road conditions allow. I would assume the road conditions when you were pulled over were dry/clear? If you were dropping speed as the police say you were makes you a greater hazard and also puts you at greater risk.

This discussion could go on for years and peeps still wouldn't agree. The fact you choose to drive slower is up to you. Slower moving vehicles are more of a hazard. Trucks don't often overtake but when they do they slow down another lane which would normally travel faster if it only contained. Trucks have the right to overtake if they choose. As said lane changing increases risk and having more vehicles overtake you including trucks puts you in a bubble of greater risk. That bubble travels with you if lots of vehicles overtake. I myself would prefer not to be that hazard. Hence why I travel with the flow of cars at the safe speeds they're doing, depending on road conditions.

I have travelled myself in very heavy rain in pitch black darkness at 12 midnight at 40mph on the motorway in a car. Trucks were doing the same speed. Very few vehicles ont road. Reduced speed was due to conditions of simply not being able to see far enough ahead to drive faster. If this were normal conditions - dry, clear day - then 40mph would be inappropriate, without a hazard warning vehicle like cranes have following them or flashing warning lights in my view.

At the end of the day it's down to peeps personal opinion on what they feel is acceptable. What peeps judge as a risk differs. What we're talking about ere is peeps driving much slower than other road users. No different to lycra clad bast**s cycling in the road (which they're allowed to do) when there's a brand new cycle path made especially for them next to the 40mph dual carriage way which they choose not to use. Lanes are minimal width and heavily used by trucks. I've cycled many years ago and would never attempt this as I feel the risk is too great. Roads are dangerous and we can take steps to reduce risk but the unexpected is possible.

What a load of shite.
The tarmac under my car is mine so fook off the lot of you. No illiterate cross dressing faggot with personal hygiene problems that shits in a plastic bag doing 55 up the M1 is going to tell me any different.

Slow the fook down you brain dead fookwits. And another thing, if the filth pull you over again, punch the twot full in the face and give him something to get upset about.

God help the future of driving if all you can worry about is someone else not attempting take off. Its a fookin limit, not a target.

Few, thats better after a 10 hour shift in the city center. ;)
