"PROG" message and spare key doesn't work?

Had no issues with my range rover yesterday although my spare key's rubber buttons were looking a bit messy. I opened it up, removed the battery and circuit board and fixed the rubber outer button.

All good so I thought. Opened the car with the key but when turning the key in the ignition the car does nothing. Tried my other key and its fine but straight after starting the word "PROG" appears on the dash.

I've searched the forum tonight and tried the key reprogramming procedure. I've done this with both keys now and the situation is still the same. Bith keys work fine to lock/unlock the car but only one will actually start it.

Does anyone know what the problem is or what PROG means? Google and the owners manual are providing no help.

Thx all.

you sure when opening up your key you didn't loose a tiny little piece of black plastic from inside ?

as this is the transponder coil and without it your car wont start !

it only sits in loosely inside the case, so can fall out once you open up the key !

Yep! Come to think of it I did! Thought it was a plastic packer to make things fit tighter but I kept it just in case.

Top man. Thanks hippo!

No problems mate

If your not sure try putting the key in the ignition and hold the plastic piece next to the key barrel and turn the key
The car should then start.

Good luck

Thanks again, yeah I will definitely try it first but it has to be it. Does the little transponder sit above or below the circuit board when the back of the key is removed? Seems crazy to me that its loose inside.

Out of curiousity what does the PROG message mean also? It os still popping up despite just using the working key for the time being. I also had trans failsafe prog message earlier but I'm hoping its a one off, although I have recently bought the car with 100k and still tge original gearbox as far as I can see. Was planning in getting the oil changed asap but wondered if the PROG message relates to the key issue or something gearbox related.
