thanks very much people

I have got this winch:

c12000ewx.jpg

Champion C12000EWX

Cost me about £350ish, have used it a few times and its a good unit, pulls my disco out of thick mud and up hill no problem, I had to pull an Isuzu trooper out of a deep, thick, boggy hole at essex off road at the weekend and it had no problems, didnt need to snatch or anything, not bad for a 'cheaper' winch.

Have a look at the guy's site who sponsors Anything Goes

Seems to have a wide range and have seen him give some straight answers to questions

I'm still dreaming of a winch:D

1st question is why? Do you really think you will use one or is it more of a "I quite like the idea of one"

Not that it matters but it may well impact on the price you will pay for one!

As for costs, well it really is a case of how long is a piece of string?

You will need a new bumper £150 to £700 depending on where you go.

Split charge battery system £20 to £200 depending on where you go.

2nd battery £70 to £160 depending on where you go.

Winch assessory kit £50 to £150 depending on where you go

then the winch itself.

People will tell you that the cheap chinese built ones are a waste of money, but if it is only for occassional use that doesn't require any speed then they work perfectly well. I have one fitted on the front of my Discovery and it has never failed me, gets lots of use as a winch recovery vehicle at club trials as well as regular self recovery. They start around £240.

Or you can go all the way to a top of the range electric or even hydraulic one that will set you back £2000.00

Then the final decision is wire or synthetic ropes, wire is much cheaper and most winches come with it as standard, but it is much harder to handle and if you ever did manage to overload it then the damage it can cause is huge! (a snapping wire rope can easily decapitate a person!!) Synthetic on the other hand is much lighter, easier to handle, less prone to damage from kinking etc does MUCH less damage should it snap and will set you back an additional £160 to £300 depending on where you go!

So anything from £600 to £3500 plus of course any fitting costs if you can't do it yourself!!

Quite an informative post, but a few points i will disagree with,
split charge system? not got one,
dual batteries, again not got,
winch accessories, built mine up over a few months,
steel or synthetic, well i run steel and have snapped a few but if you are careful and always think it will snap and take precautions it is as safe as it will ever be, it is after all a dangerous activity,
as for accessories, well i built mine up over a few months or so

the rest of the post i agree with, you will need a bumper and an someway of isolating the winch. fitting is simple enough but if you aren't confident then get it fitted by someone else, it will be under a lot of stress.

after all that learn to use the thing properly too, they are a bloody dangerous bit of kit in the wrong hands.

thank yous all very much , what are they split charge things for ? jonggould yours looks like what i want !,does that come ready to use all you need to do is fit the bumper and wire it up to the battery and thats you ready to go ? ,i am going to put plasma rope on it, also was looking at tublar bumper but very expensive tho :-(

Split charge enables you to have a second battery

If the engine won't start and you need to use the winch, you can isolate one battery - the idea is you still have one charged battery to try and get started once you've pulled yourself out!

Yeah pretty much, you will need either a ready made bumper or you will need a winch tray and make your own, thats what I did:

If you dont want to make a bumper there are plenty around for about £150-£200, they should all have a standard format winch tray.

As for the other bits, I started off with only 1 battery, tried to use it once and it my battery just didnt have the juice so I have gone over to a split charge system running 2 batteries. When it comes to the split chargers the best option is a 120amp relay inline between the two batteries, activate the relay from an ignition live and that way if the engine is off then the batteries are isolated, if its running then its charging both batteries. Dont bother with expensive split systems, they are all crap in my experience and the £20 relay is the best and most reliable system.

As for extras, paddocks do a good little kit for about £40 that includes strop, snatch block, shackles and gloves all in a nice little bag.

heres a little video of it in operation at the weekend:

I had the same theory as you, however, i now have a dead winch on the front of my (currently dead) landy. I haven't stripped it yet, but, it doesn't want to do anything.

I had it just over a year, it's been used on the odd P&P site and occasionally on lanes in tricky situations. Oh and to move big trailers out of gardens, etc!

The under bumper part is a normal steering guard, its needed if your going to be going off road as you will stand a good chance of bending steering rods. The bumper itself I made from 2x4 heavy gauge box section using the original bumper mounts. I would get a bumper before you get a guard as some dont allow fitting of the standard style guards.

And yeah 9000lb is pretty good, it should be enough to get you out of most things, I went for the 12000lb as it wasnt that much more expensive and more is better in this situation. I belive the package deals are pretty good but I dont have much experience with off the shelf bumpers, some may be better than others I cant say im afraid...

ok no bother buddy , thanks for your time and info ;-) helped alot might just get the 12000 then , what about the 6 hp or 4 , is more still better yeh ?

Reading your replies it seems your are real green at this stuff but atleast willing to listen and take on what others say,

My advice would be get to know your vehicle and your limitations ( the vehicle will have a lot less than you do ;) ) Then go from there,

To be hounest a Winch is right down on my list of bits after body protection ect, I would defo advise split charge as its great for running extras, There will always be some one on a Pay and Play site with a winch .

lol i have found out what it can do i car trust me :-D ,but ofcourse i am going to listen yous have experiance, and for body protection as already said some winches dont allow some types of steering guard one. remember am up in scotland there isnt alot of pay n play , i am a part time gamekeeper so i go up the hills to feed pheasant so am usally myself with no other cars thats the reason i want a winch

Very true, if your doing any sort of off roading I would go for steering guard, diff guards, tank guard and some rock sliders idealy with built in tree sliders (mine have saved me lots of damage) before a winch...

If you feel you will benifit then get it done, as has been said guards are a higher priority but if you know you will use it its not gonna hurt to get it first. I will say if its muddy fields and the like then try waffle boards first, winches are cool but its a slow process for getting unstuck and waffle boards you can just throw under your tyres and go...

you thought about tirfors or Hi Lifts with Chains, as they are multipurpose. You can lift pull and various other bits. As said waffle boards would be idea, If your going anywhere near peat im sure you know HUGE Tyres are the way ;)

yeah i have one of those hilifts , need the waffle board they looj good because on the shoot there is alot of wee burns too cross but have steep banks , so i could use them to cross them , yeh got bf mud terrains 265 75 16's on they really do help ;-) and also want the winch for the looks aswell hehehe
