Pressure in expansion tank

Hi all,

Quick question, I understand that the cooling system does pressurise but when I open the cap I get a gurgling noise a long with the pressure escaping is this normal also even if the Landy is left overnight the system is still pressurised should this be the case?

Sounds like you may have a slight head gasket leak. Do you lose any water at all?

Funny you should mention that, I had a look today and have indeed used a little bit bit of coolant.....

Head gasket then. Is it 200Tdi or 300Tdi?

300 tdi, but there is no signs of foaming in the oil or milky gunk in the oil either.

rarely is ,if gasket blows across it would pump coolant out big time ,but a slight leak across the fire ring to water way will just give added pressurisation and coolant loss over time

So how long would you say it have left in it?

Also how do you know what head gasket is needed?

Ok quick update.....I just had to go out and move car of drive, so guessed while I was out there double check the Landy coolant level. It would appear that after the car has cooled down the water levels stabilise and go back to being as they should be.......!!!

impossible to say it might be ok, system does pressurise as normal so faint over pressurisation is hard to tell till coolant loss is noticed on longish runs or over time ,its worth check rad core gets hot all over just after youve been for a drive ,and system is topped up and checked by removing top thermostat bung it should over flow , some coolant loss will happen over time its a matter of noticing it getting worse , head gasket is determined by number of holes on original gasket 1,2 or 3 though most fit err5263

Ahh yes this is another concern of mine as I don't think the rad is hot enough, even after a long run I can comfortably hold my hand all over the rad and not burn my hand.

I suspect you might have/had an airlock in the coolant circuit. If it were mine I would bleed the system and top up as necessary.

Re the radiator and whether it is warming up or not, do remember that coolant only passes through the radiator ONCE the thermostat has opened, allowing passage of coolant to take place. If the 'stat is not opening there will never be coolant flowing through the rad.

If it were me I would be taking the 'stat out, putting it in a pan full of boiling water to see if it opens - any doubts at all just replace it, they're only about £4 !!!
