hello there, my friend 'tubber' and me gave my 200tdi 90 a tweek on the pump the other day and i cant belive the difference in power, it left my dads 2.8tdx daihatsu behind in a big trail of black smoke, i am getting more power hungry now, what do u think is the best mod to get abit more power out of her without costing a fortune which i know it can? any ideas? :D:D

Fuel and air

More of both

However if you want real power you need a big yank V8

There's quite a bit you can do.

But depends on budget and what you want really.

What "tweeks" have you done so far?

Common mods to accompany pump tweaks are to increase the turbo boost. The 200Tdi runs slightly lower boost than a 300Tdi. Usually people up the boost to match the 300Tdi.

Fit a larger intercooler. You can either buy as a kit from somewhere like Allisport or completely custom fab one of your own. If you can find something like an old Supra Turbo (MK3) at a scrapyard, then the intercooler off that is a good upgrade.

From here on it's all the normal mods as to any car.

So a freer flowing exhaust will help a bit. And the larger the bore the better for lower EGT's (exhaust gas temps).

A more free flowing air filter and intake with a cold air induction. Although if you off road a lot or wade you need to consider if it's worth it.

After this it's going to start and get more pricey:

-ported cylinder head
-different cams
-bigger or hybrid turbo, maybe water cooled
-displacement increase to 2.8 litres

Two less common mods but probably worthwhile to consider:

-propane (LPG). Very good power gains to be had
-nitrous oxide. Works surprisingly well on diesel engines and can be used in combination with propane

other advantages are you can remove them and sell them on or fit them to other vehicles if you wish. Something you can't do with other mods as easily.

The only other option is to then look at engine swaps. Either a Td5 or a cammed RV8 or something non Land Rover such as a SBC/FBC or some bigger displacement diesels.

I'd start of by working out exactly what’s going on with your engine now, I've seen people tweak these engines beyond what they are able to do and created all sorts of issues. I'd get a turbo boost gauge installed then work out what’s left in the engine rather than just blindly tweaking things.

Don't forget your drivetrain will begin to take a hit if you start increasing the engine output.

It's a Landrover, it's not supposed to be a performance vehicle.

Drivetrain is and can be an issue I agree. But don't let stereotypical British bull**** cloud the issue.

Remember the same drivetrain components are used with the 3.9 EFI (and some of the same with the 4.0 and 4.6 V8's).

Any of these make more HP than is likely viable from a Tdi.

More bhp yes but a lot less low down torque, which is what will wreck transmissions.
If you can see black smoke every time you accelerate you have gone to far on the pump tweak.

so far all we have done to tweek her is alter the rack screw about 1/4 of a turn, she dosent smoke everytime i put my foot down on normal trips but if u put her in a lower gear and give it to her there is a big trail of smoke :D was talkin to a lad in the pub who has a 300tdi block with 300tdi crank and the rest is 200tdi, he made his intercooler from a land rover radiator, it does seem to work well but she is a bit laggy and it takes up loads of room

mines similar, tuned so that up to about 3/4 throttle no smoke, then it like kicks again and roars away but lots of smoke, has been described as a smokescreen :D, havent done the turbo yet but that should reduce high end smoke hopefully,

PEAK torque yes. Where it makes it and especially low rpm torque has almost no bearing at all though.

That said, a Tdi is not a torque monster. Stock they only make 195lb ft, even modded you're probably only looking at 260lb ft or so.

A stock 3.9 EFI makes 232lb ft and a 4.6 277lb ft.

If you can't see black smoke every time you accelerate you haven't gone to far enough on the pump tweak.
