Spent an hour looking for "wet spots", nothing.

My fuel tank has a drain plug, I will try that.

After that I dont know what to do?

If I dont find the problem I will never be able to trust this vehicle. :-(

You're not going to smell diesel unless it's escaping somewhere, and from what you've said it sounds like air is getting into the system somewhere.

You must have missed something.

I'd pop round an have a look if you were closer............

Scratch that. I'd pop round an have a look if you'd pay the air fare and put us up for a week :D :D :D

May consider that if I cant figure it out soon:confused:

Spent an hour under Pumkin last night with a flashlight.
I could find nothing.
But I figure if it took almost 3 weeks to leak enough to cause her to starve for fuel it must be a really really slow leak.

So, mu plan now is to order a complete set of fuel lines, from tank>fuel lift pump>fuel filter>injection pump and back to the tank and replace them all.
I will also drain and clean the tank this weekend.

Surely this should do it.

Thats probably because your looking in the wrong place.

leaky leak off pipe. it may not leak a lot of diesel out but may draw plenty of air in to cause the problems your having ;)

whats the oil level like, its been known for lift pumps to fail and spill oil into the sump, you'd smell it but not see it there.

Checked the oil, perfect level, smells like oil.

I have a friend that is an ex MOT inspector and a great mechanic.
I told him what is going on, he also thinks that its a fuel line issue.
He suggested that I run it til she does it again, as soon as she does get out and open the fuel cap and see if there is any vacuum pressure, this would mean that the tank breather is clogged.
If not its probly a slow leak in one of the lines that is slowly sucking air.

either way, a complete new set of fuel lines are on the way.

The other thing is, when she starves, all I have to do is remove the fuel filter and fill with diesel and she will run for days. So I will keep some diesel in Pumkin along with my filter wrench, paper towel and flashlight.

OK.
Going on a roadtrip tomorrow and guess what?
Shes done it again, starving herself of fuel!!!

I have a feeling it may be my fault, keep in mind that I have changed all the fuel lines and she has run fine for over 800 miles.

Sunday I changed her oil and all the filters including the fuel filter.

When I change the fuel filter I always fill it with diesel then install it. Is it possible that I have air in the line?

Here is whats happening this time.

Usually when I start her she fires right up instantly, no hesitation.
Now when I turn the key I get a rattly sound (from the starter I think) and she slowly/roughly starts after she rolls over a few times. Once she gets started and idles then she seems to run fine
But I am not sure.

The trip tomorrow is at least 600miles (7 days) and I really don't want to spend it looking for mechanics.
Thinking I may have to cancel.
But, is there any way to tell if I have air in the fuel line> If I did not quite fill the fuel filter would this be enough to do it.

I have already changed the lift pump 3 time, surely it cannot be that again?

Help!

Just the throttle travel needed adjusting on mine, had slipped and wasn't getting full travel, fuel tank was changed too as after 20 years was full of all manor of ****e blocking the filter
