So in the last couple of days I have bought:
Primer
Etch primer
Lacquer
Red paint
Wire brush thingy for my drill
Filler
Rust treatment stuff
Windscreen seal
Parachute cord

Assuming the rust treatment comes tomorrow, I am going to have a fun weekend...

Jobs I will be doing:
Sanding off and painting the bulkhead windscreen hinge things
Changing windscreen seal
Fixing rust on bulkhead
Fixing rust and filling rear corner capping near the light

Anything that I have forgotten to get? I already have some wet and dry.

Also, any hints on how to do any of the things above?! have never done any proper painting before.

Ok, cool. Will have a look.

Spray paint. Have just been out to look at stuff and the windscreen brackets are actually really pitted. Guess I will have to get new ones, but they are expensive.
 
On ebay they go from £150 upwards........I'm thinking of doing the same with mine as the rubber will need replacing but thats as far as its gone, just thinking.
Wiring in, i'd guess a switch, relay and probably some kind of timer, save forgetting to switch it off....oh and relevant fuses....

Ah, can't afford that. Saving up to do the crossmember, not much of it left now...
 
Post up photos of how you get on, take your time with the paint, get a really smooth surface and wipe it down with white spirit and let dry, primer and sand then primer again followed by topcoat, allow each layer to dry properly atleast 8 hours between each and spray thin from about 30cm away and get the can warm in water for half hour beforehand and shake well.

Won't be perfect show room but will pass muster.

Alternatively do what i did, grind back rust, paint with anti rust paint and then normal paint using a brush and leave it, I didn't sand anything lol by my paint is rough roller painted :D
 
Good idea to get the landy buffed about a month after the paint has dried will give time for the paint to dry/harden properly, it will give in a nice shine and get rid of all the little scratches in the paintwork

So far I have wire brushed and rust convertered the 2 rusty bits. Have had to order some new bulkhead brackets though as they were too far gone and a waste of effort. Have gone with some black ones in the hope that they will look ok and I won't have to paint them.

Oh, and it is pouring, so I have had to duct tape a plastic bag over the back, and seal the door with it where I took the door seal out!

One question, under the windscreen bracket there is some oxidisation of the paint. You can't see it as the bracket covers it. What is the best way to make sure it doesn't spread?
 
Smear of grease on the bracket (copper slip) is what I did with mine, no idea if it is the best method tho

I was wondering about sanding back, masking off, then primering and lacquering it.

Also, I opened the vent flaps yesterday, and now they won't close??

black paint it comes with isn't good enough, you need to paint it.

oxidation - galvanic corrosion? you need to stop dissimilar metals touching or stop water from forming a bridge.

make sure the gaskets are still there on them - mxc9982 MXC9983

or use some cut rubber/plastic/tyre tube.

also check the inside.

Yes, I think it must have been galvanic corrosion as it was the ali going white and powdery. I guess it was from the steel thread inserts in the bracket. If I stop the 2 metals touching will it just stop the corrosion, or do I need to seal it or something?

ah right, it's an alu bracket.. i was thinking it was steel.

yeah if it's bubbles and white then it's galvanic. you need to stop the electrolyte bridging them...

if it's the steel inserts you can try duralec or tefgel or paint the heads when fitted to stop water getting in. :)

I have some duralec, will put some of that on to make double sure.

The drivers side corrosion is a lot worse, will have to paint that I reckon.
 
So, had a couple of days doing stuff, thought I should post some pics.

Has been raining on and off, but fortunately I found that my 90 just about fits in my garage :)

Then I wire brushed the rust off and put rust convertor on:

Primered (yeah and don't ask why I didn't mask off the side of the defender, no idea):

Then I sanded it back and added some filler:

Have sanded it back and primered again, but didn't take photos of that, so will get some when I get it out of the garage again.

I think I will just do one more coat of filler and primer just to make it a decent finish. I am pleased with how it looks at the moment, but just wants a bit more tidying.
