Is there such thing as a cold start fix unit? My diesel runs and starts fine when hot, but has serious fueling (I suspect) issues when cold started. Runs like a single cylinder lister traction engine.

ok will check them. to make a short story long. i had the engine replaced with a "good condition" fleabay 90k one. obviously this means nothing. it turned up and according to my trusty lads in the garage the sump was on the wrong way along with the oil pick up suggesting that it could have been from a 5 series?? not sure. anyway they swapped the sump and pick up around and got it all back in, as i said it revs really nicely, pulls as well as any of these diesels do, just idle warm is slightly rough, (easy to ignore) idle when cold is a disaster, often will just die if its not revved up. and obviously takes a while to fire whilst cranking. i thought that glow plugs would just ease starting and not affect cold idle? presumably i'm wrong? the lads thought it could be cold start ecu programming differences between LR and BMW that were messing with the injection pump. possible? i thought not.

They must also have changed the injection pump or changed the top at least. Glow plugs are favorite for bad cold starts.

Just enough to cause "lumpy" idle when cold.
:D

Doubt that, bad static is corrected when engine is running. Unless it's miles out, if it was, hot starting would be a problem. Needs to look at the glow plugs and see if they help. If he still has lumpy cold idle look at compressions or injectors. You never know if someone has played with pump top and fitted it wrongly. Lots of things to look at if glows don't cure it. A bit of diag may throw some info up.

Right, new glow plugs in. No difference sadly, I know the glow plugs are working as I tested them. So therefore I beleieve the relay is working too. I'm thinking injection pump timing? Anyone agree?

No if timing was a long way out hot start would suffer. Glow plugs maybe fine but are they getting any power? Should be 12 volts when glow lamp is on, if not check the glow relay. How long does glow lamp stay on for?

Sorry meant to add that hot start isn't good. Fine if started within 30 seconds of ignition off. Any longer and it cranks for ages and starts with a dab of throttle.

You said earlier hot start was fine. Incorrect info incorrect answers. You need some diag on it to see what the modulation is, static would have to be a bloody long way out to effect cold start. Cold start has a lot going for it, extra fuel and glow plugs. Check the plugs for voltage when glow lamp is on first of all. If non check the 80 AMP flat fuse in the glow timer relay. You need special tools to set static timing.
