hi guys
i'd like to firstly introduce myself. My name is Mark and i live near Belfast.
I only bought my 1st range rover in march this year and was really happy with it up until maybe a month ago when it developed a wee fault.
The car is a 2000 model, 2.5td. More often than not it idles at 1200rpm. Sometimes it also runs a bit rough but this will clear with a rev. When it runs rough like this it also gives out black smoke.
My local dealer said it was the air flow meter, but couldnt supply 1, so i bought a 2nd hand 1 of ebay. It made no difference.
The service light has never came on and I've had the filters changed

any advice wud be greatly appreciated
Cheers

You need to get it on diagnostics, it should idle a lot lower than that. Injector 4 is a possible, but also someone may have tried to adjust the FIP or fitted a hot start mod that doesn't work.

ok guys, thanks for that.
is number4 injector a common fault then. is there a way of testing it ?
I've had it to our dealer already but i'll try to take it back this week to put it back on diagnostic machine

cheers

The MAF sensor detects the amount of air being pulled in by the engine and adjusts the fuelling to match.
The electronics read signals from the crank sensor and number four injector to determine the engine speed.
If something has gone wrong so that it won't tick-over correctly someone may have adjusted the injector pump to hide the fault by increasing the idle speed.
A Land Rover expert should have the diagnostics to read whatever the fault is and this, allied with a bit of experience, should put you on the right path.

Just a little concerned that you say that you've been back to your 'local dealer' once already and they didn't fix it.
Are they Landy experts? If not then their diagnostics might not be up to the job. If you bought it from a dealer then I'd be asking them to fix it, either through a L.R. dealer or specialist independent.

hi dogsbody
yea the dealer i took it to is a land rover dealer. They said it showed an air flow meter fault, tho the car was running good that particular day.
I bought the car private, with no warranty but it was driving great up til about a month ago and has got progressively worse.
thanks for your reply

hi guys
just a wee update on my car's problem
i left all the injectors in for testing and indeed, the number 4 injector was faulty.
i decided then to buy a new 1 and get the rest reconditioned.
they should all be back tomorrow so hopefully it'll be back on the road by tues eve.
thanks to all who offered advice

Hiya Mark
It's really appreciated when folk come back and tell us how they get on. It's how we all learn. Thanks, good luck.

hi guys
well i got the range rover back on the road, but unfortunately with little success.
it still idles at 1200 sometimes, and runs rough, almost like its off a cylinder.

Sorry, I thought you said that this garage you took it to were Land Rover specialists?

I strongly think that you'd better find yourself another garage.

Rpm is controlled by fuelling. Are you sure someone has not had the FIP top off and set it back in the wrong place. Other than that sounds like a heading for home injector pump.

I've certainly managed to create those symptoms before on mine by putting the fip top on in the wrong place.
Was any work at all done to it between it working well and developing these symptoms?

hi guys
well got 5 injectors reconditioned and bought new 4th injector but the car still drives just the same.

hi jonbill
no there was no work carried out on it until it started acting up.
the car came with a disconnected tuning box so i connected it up today to see if it makes any difference
i.ll let you know if it does

mark

hi guys
the saga continues
now with the tuning box connected, the car runs fine for maybe 5mins, then it'll idle at 1200 for next 5mins, but is fine after that.
seems to be quite smooth too with this box connected

hi guys
well my car is running really bad again
it now idles at 1200 most of the time and can be really smokey too
it also runs like its off a cylinder sometimes too
is putting me off driving it to be honest

cheers

hi guys
we finally found the problem with my motor
the water temp sensor was faulty, tellin the ecu the engine was cold, therefore it was overfuelling itself causing all my problems
there is 2 of these sensors on the passenger side of the engine. i changed the front 1 and simply disconnected the back 1
all good now
