P38 key stuck in door

Had to recharge battery on 2000 RR P38 and when I put it back I got the KEY CODE LOCKOUT message. It would not reset using the key fob so I tried to the reset the access code using the Emergency Key Access in the manual. Failed to reset and now key is stuck in the lock.


I found the spare key and that turned off the immobiliser and started the car, but the other key is still stuck in the door and will unlock the door after using central locking with spare key. Any ideas?
 
Now that is a first for me.....

I can only think of lube and a lot of jiggling....As far as I know there is no mechanical 'grip' to hold the key in the lock....only can think that the lock barrel pins have fallen in and jammed the key in place!
 
Thanks Saint, got me beat as well. I don't want to force it and wondered what could be physically holding it in, perhaps the pins are locked in place. I'll try and get some WD40 inside the barrel and give it a jiggle, as you say. I don't want to do it but if all else fails I suppose the only answer is getting to the latch, but I won't be able to get it out with the key in!

**UPDATE** No amount of jiggling will free it. I can only think there are pins that are stuck in the notches at the end of the profile part of the key. Still not sure if I can get to the latch with the key in.
 
You've probably tried turning it slightly & jiggling combined - as in is it possible the barrel has moved slightly?
 
I squirted plenty in, around the key, but difficult to tell how far into the barrel it has gone. As far as I can remember the barrel is sealed in the latch. I will see if WD40 has worked it's magic overnight and if not I fear the only solution will be to cut the key of the fob and get the latch out.

Ratae, tried in all positions, but strangely will turn anti-clockwise to the Lock position but won't turn clockwise to the unlock position. Must admit I haven't used the key for many years, always use the central locking.
 
The door latch mechanism is completely separate from the handle- connections between the two are by rods- one for key turns, one for latch. No reason why you can't get the handle out with the key in it.
 
Mine did the same...had to move the handle a litle open/close and turn the key slightly and then it was released. On mine, if looking carefully, you could se that the key was not comletly horizontal.
 
After thinking there was a solution I soon realised the P38a Key Removal Tool was not the answer and as the key was lose in the lock and force would not pull it out I think the tool would have ripped the handle off the door. :(

This morning I had another look and after noting Brillo’s comment about horizontal I tried turning anti-clockwise with a bit more force and something clicked in the lock and the key turned to the horizontal, which it wouldn’t yesterday, and Hey Presto out came the key. :)

Whether the WD40 had helped overnight or if I used more force this morning I can’t tell but clearly turning the key to the horizontal was the answer. Thanks all for your suggestions.

Yeah until you turn the key to the centre position it won't come out.
