Have you checked the glow plug fuse in the box behind the battery as it sounds like the plugs are not working.
Car used to start first time without any problems. 6 months ago starting became erratic. Engine turned over but would not fire up. Then tried 3 glow cycles and started up after 10 seconds on the 3rd glow. Lots of white diesel smelling smoke out the back. After couple of months became harder to start so changed battery, temp sensor, timer relay and glow plugs. Didn't have any effect. Tested old glow plugs and they all worked. Then tried 5 glows - this helped for a short while but then car would only fire up after 5 glow if you kept starter motor turning as it tried to fire up - at least 20 seconds cranking. Even more smoke out the back. Then tried leaving 10 seconds before turning stater so pump fully primed. Didn't help much but seemed a bit more inclined to start. Replaced in tank fuel pump. No effect. Then stopped firing up altogether no matter how many glows. Used easy start and it fired up after 10 seconds of cranking. Over last month still struggling to fire up - replaced drain off pipes as it was smelling of diesel in engine bay. Started after 3 glow. Starter motor then stopped turning after 10 seconds. Try again and it starts. Decided to let the garage have a look.
Chains stretching/stretched?
Pump static timing?
Wammers is about to go into doctors questions with you. This is how it rolls.
Every answer you give will lead to another question and bring you closer to an answer.
Trust him, this is how a good mechanic gets an idea before he even lifts the bonnet!
Good luck and run with him![]()
Time for the crystal ball Tony! He posted it took 10 seconds to start on EasystartNot playing never mind eh. From his description and if it does run and start normally hot then he needs to be having a close look at glow plugs, glow relay fuse, relay function and connections to glow plug feed cables. .
Time for the crystal ball Tony! He posted it took 10 seconds to start on Easystartwonder if its down on compression ,it's wonderful stuff for breaking piston rings. How are you today mate, still waiting for the head to come back so I can finish the engine. May fall in love with it again and put the replacement on hold. Speak soon.
TrueA bit better thanks. Depends what it does warm, from his description does sound like glow system problem. Doesn't really matter how good the plugs are if they are not being powered.,

We expect yours to be perfect.Just been down to mine started, checked tyre pressures. Lad is taking it for MOT later. I can't at the moment still a bit crook, but has not been used for six weeks started first turn.![]()
Starts and runs fine when hot. The garage are convinced it' s leaking injectors which are letting air in overnight and so engine trying to prime the engine first thing hence difficulty in starting. So I'm going to put in a one way valve to see if that helps. If it does then at least it might be worth getting injectors tested. Or consider taking a punt and getting second hand off the auction site. Can't really justify spending yet more money on a sinking ship!
Or down on compression but as the op says its fine when hot then I concur with Wammers .I was thinking because of the white un-burnd fuel there wasn't enough derv going through to fire it up in the first place?
Checked the voltage at each glow plug - reading 11 volts with one plug reading 10.53v .
