Local garage recons leaking injectors are the reason why poor starting in the morning. They suggest replacing with new or getting them serviced. Apparently there are different types so they'll need to remove each one to get a serial number. I thought I'd just get a good second hand set of the auction site. Does it really matter what the serial number is?

Are you sure it's not just the leak off pipes? There are two types on each engine, numbers 1,2,3,5 and 6 are normal injectors and number 4 is different as it signals the point of injection back to the ECU for timing purposes.
I would hang fire until someone more knowledgeable on the diesel comes along.
I've not heard of the injectors leaking but I guess it's not impossible.
@wammers is the guru on these and anything he tells you about them should be heeded.

That was my feeling about it. At first they wanted to replace all the glow plugs - till I told them they'd been done 6 months ago. Along with new battery, new alternator, intank pump, timer relay, temp sensor and leak off pipes. And it still struggles to fire up from cold!!!! Goes fine when warm.

Btw if I do go down the second hand route will they need to be 'coded' to the ECU or is it just a drop in job?

I know that if the timing is out then they suffer with hot starting and you do need at least 3 glow plugs on consecutive firing cylinders to have any hope at all of a good cold start. The timing chains I believe can stretch and cause starting issues. The other things I'd check would be the temp sensors on the head.
I get the feeling the garage are working blind and guessing so if it were me I'd be asking if anyone has a diesel nanocom near you and get some data.
I think the injectors are a straight swap but not certain on that.
As I said, wammers is the guru but I think he's not fully fit so not on as often as normal.

Diesel nanocom a good idea. TBH I thought this garage had the diagnostics - but they obviously don't - and they're a Land Rover specialist!

Re check the leak off pipes they have a habit of not lasting long and splitting at the ends, I cable tied mine and others have heat shrinked the ends, which seams to help a lot.

Get good glow plugs not cheap ones, a branded make, they tend to break off when you take them out otherwise, glow plugs are a good place to start, while your waiting for them, recharge the battery too, it wont hurt
Go to a dealership for them like GM

Reading your other post, I really think that if you can't do the work yourself, you really need to find a better garage.

Garage was my last option - they're a Land Rover specialist - thought they'd be better than this. I already replaced battery, glow plugs (expensive ones) , fuel pump, temp sensor, alternator, timer relay. Getting bit fed up now!

So, listen to the people on here, especially wammers. It's not unheard of for glow plugs to fail so check them again and all the wiring.
Wammers will help people until the cows come home but he doesn't suffer fools gladly. If you follow his advice to the letter and it doesn't solve your problem then it's scrap!
I would seriously consider getting nanocom as it will allow you to give us real values that will help diagnose the problem and is much less than a set of injectors.

Please describe in detail what actually happens when you try to start the engine from cold. EG how long does the glow lamp stay lit, whether it fires but does not catch Etc

Car used to start first time without any problems. 6 months ago starting became erratic. Engine turned over but would not fire up. Then tried 3 glow cycles and started up after 10 seconds on the 3rd glow. Lots of white diesel smelling smoke out the back. After couple of months became harder to start so changed battery, temp sensor, timer relay and glow plugs. Didn't have any effect. Tested old glow plugs and they all worked. Then tried 5 glows - this helped for a short while but then car would only fire up after 5 glow if you kept starter motor turning as it tried to fire up - at least 20 seconds cranking. Even more smoke out the back. Then tried leaving 10 seconds before turning stater so pump fully primed. Didn't help much but seemed a bit more inclined to start. Replaced in tank fuel pump. No effect. Then stopped firing up altogether no matter how many glows. Used easy start and it fired up after 10 seconds of cranking. Over last month still struggling to fire up - replaced drain off pipes as it was smelling of diesel in engine bay. Started after 3 glow. Starter motor then stopped turning after 10 seconds. Try again and it starts. Decided to let the garage have a look.
