P38 Cutting out when Changing down

the viscous fan has gone and the engine is shutting down???? what a load of rubbish. my viscous fan was knackered and it didn't "shut the engine down" it made the engine over heat under load. and even then when the red light was on and water was ****ing out the bonnet it still pulled 2 horses up a hill and i mean hill! off the dual carrage way to safety.

change your injector pump, don't mess around with hot fix boxes etc. the injector pump is loosing preasure and not suppling the fuel. and while the pumps out send all the injectors away for cleaning/recon. then drop the tank and clean it out. you said you've replaced the pump already so hopefully you would have done this as a matter of course. unless you did that bodge job thing and cut a hole over the top!!;) i know alot of people do it but seriously if the range rover was meant to have a hole cut in the floor it would have little dotted lines and a picture of scissors where to cut:hysterically_laughi

You are a bit keen on chucking a grand at a fuel injection pump when that might not be the problem:doh:
The only reason there is not an access hole for the pump is the bean counters thought it cost too much, not to mention the extra profit for the garage if the tank has to be dropped. Properly done it is not detremental. I used to do it to change the brake pads on MK2 Jags, my son does it for the same reason on buses. Never caused a problem:)

And yes No holes were cut in the car. low pressure on two injectors and hot start problem so i would say that the only solution is sort the injector pump out. By the way the hot start is a piece of **** as it made it run like as sack of spuds.

Low pressure on 2 injectors could possibly be worn injectors.
A good hot start circuit correctly installed works fine but there are some crap ones about and some seem to have difficulty installing them correctly:eek:

there is nothing else it can be! he's changed the in tank pump, its got a hot starting issue. the engine is cutting out due to the engine over running (at the time of going over a brow of a hill or a sudden deceleration i expect!) and the pressure not being present in the fuel system is not allowing for the recovery of the rev's. compounded by the fact it's a bugger to start when it has cut out due to the hot starting issue. the pump is F**KED.

unfortunatly it some times takes a grand! or less if you shop around for the alternatives.;) you can buy a recon injector distributor pump for £600+vat.

I very occasionally get a flash of the injector light on deceleration : had it yesterday. Stuck in a bottle of injector cleaner ( REDEX) and tried to get it to repeat.
Might be bollocks but it seems to run better with an occasional drink of the stuff.
Is it my imagination ?
 
If Dapper Dog has no Injector Light showing is this a blown bulb? Shouldn`t all diesel P38s have orange `nozzle/jet` lights that come on with the ign?
But that`s an aside; sounds like a worn FIP to this non-expert. A good dose of cleaner is worth a try, but don`t hold your breath! Can`t see what milage you have but over 120k-ish may be due a pump strip. Seem to remember another thread (can`t find it now) that said there`s a needle inside the FIP that can get jammed with swarf or varnish deposits, so trying a cleaner is worth a quick cheap shot.
Maybe Datatek means the XJ6 mkII? Not the MkII mkII ...?

Correct. Oh the joys of trying to get the MKII handbrake to work on anything other than level ground. And to make it worse they fit a new all singing and dancing IRS axle and keep the same bloody handbrake system, but made it better (snigger) by increasing the size of the handbrake pads by about a 1/8" all round. Which really improved the efficency loads. NOT.

I remember it well, the hadbrake that is. The Nissan Xtrail has the same handbrake feature, effing useless. Dealer calmly advised me it was design fault and couldn't be rectified:rolleyes: Interesting pulling away from the lights on hill with the caravan, nifty footwork needed or better still 3 feet:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
got the car back, drove it 6 miles and the rad went, sent ti back and he fixed it, got it back and the compressor failed, fixed that and drove 2 miles and the rad burst again. All fixed now apart from the heating. Does anyone know if someone around the midlands in Ireland has software to reset the hevac

what was the root cause of your blown rads, cause mine's done it twice now too, first time the water pump had gone, second time the viscous fan had gone, but I'm still getting totally random overheating episodes and am getting very frustrated with it. (and yes it's had a negative sniff test, before anyone asks!)
 
Don’t know but if i had to put money on it i would say it was the mechanic who had it out to fix the injector pump. The thermostat was gone and he didn’t even bother to replace it said I might like to do it so as far as I am concerned he damaged it while disconnecting it or refitting it. New thermostat now and the temp gauge doesn’t move now just sits at 12:00
