The one on my shoulders ....
I have a spare stripped down knackered m62tub44 engine in my garage and i am currently looking for an M62b35 version cheap enough with knackered bores that i can bore and hone out to a 4.4 and then supercharge as I don't really want to put steel or iron liners in the one i have and there are probably too many bores to fit Alusil liners to without compromising the strength of the 4.4 engine i have, besides the amount of money it would cost just to buy the liners would outweigh the saving of being able to use the original pistons and rings. Mine is still going strong but has a rattle that i want to lose that is either a compromised vanos unit or something more serious. i thought if i build a new engine and then swap it out with mine it would save me having mine off the road for ages while i fix it.

Intriguing......

so you get a cheaper 3.5 block and bore it out, do you then have the bores treated or steel lined?

I presume it has the duplex chain anorl seen as it wasn't TU (read ruined)

Nope, as long as you get the right block, the later ones and the UK/ US ones were Alusil and not Nikasil which didn't like the high sulphur fuel, so as long as it is an Alusil you can bore them out but the honing and finishing process is quite involved. i have spoken to Sunnen and have all the part numbers of the kit you need to do the job properly and I have a number of contacts that can do the machining for me up to the honing part which i would do myself but the Sunnen guy gave me a contact for a company that are already honing the Alusil engines that would do it for me if I bottled it on buying the kit. Alusil is a very high silicon aluminium and not a liner, you have to machine the bores in a specific way to expose the silicon and that is your hard wearing surface.
I could just buy another 4.4 crankcase and swap it out but where is the fun in that and besides it may already have 200K miles on it, if i am going to do it, i want it to be like new - then i will sell it at great loss and buy the 5.0 SC..oh hang on :)
Oh and no duplex chain, it is identical providing i swap out the crank and pistons and looking at it i will need to machine it out as the crankcase has casting allowance for the starter motor to be on either side so i may also have to blank off the other side, effectively it is the same blaock for the M62b35, 44, 4.6 and 4.8 but the 4.8 is more involved ans i looked art boring mine to 4.6 but the pistons are rare and would cost more than a set of forged pistons to suit steel liners.

well that is this thread hijacked and the OP insulted - all in a nights work :)

Couldn't use many sites due to not being private, had to keep changing my passwords, numerous times on many sites. They had access to my Google account and kept changing the password I would receive a notification via text and have to change it again, just a bloody nuisance no lasting harm.

Stay off those russian porn sites.

So a 4.8 hoicked out of an X5 is a no go?

You could fit a 4.8 in theory but again it could already be fooked and will return you around 370 BHP new which is what i would expect to get from an SC on a 4.4 but would be brand new. THe m62B48 engine is a not common and has other modifications to head gasket / other shiney metal stuff / electronics / mapping n ting :)
I could use just the bottom end but would still need to map i would guess.
I was originally looking to get an M62tub44 engine back on it's feet in a known good condition which is still possible using the Alusil liners but probably not practical for all bores rather than the odd one or two.

@Saint.V8 Ant, have you sorted out that fecking spark plug yet, i am running out of material here !!
Not yet Andy, have to wait until pay day.....then I can order up the gaskets, tools, etc etc.....uber broke at the moment......did all the front suspension arms, bushes and steering roods for the MOT. Then realised the rears are on their way out too....plus the bits for the P38.....

Was waiting ofr pay day to get the final bits for the P38 - now that is going to have to wait another month as I now need to fork out on this one again!

The gift that keeps on giving is the Range Rover.
The top end gaskets are a lot cheaper than they were, I think you will get away with just cam cover gaskets for bank 1 won’t you or are you thinking timing chain guides and vanos while you are in there just to add to your fun ?
