Hi folks, I'm new to the delights of Landys and have just taken delivery of a '72 series 3. I have a quick question re 4WD: the system appears to function as per spec ie hi/ lo ratio lever works and the 4WD yellow knob pops up when going from lo to hi ratio as normal. My question is how can I be sure the system has returned to 2WD once the yellow lever gas popped up. The reason I ask is that the gearbox sounds rather noisy in normal driving. True I have no experience of these machines so might just be being a bit paranoid.

Thanks for your help

Oooo, good question. I just trust mine works but how do you know.

What about find some gravel or ice and floor it. If you crash, it's probably in 2 wheel drive.

Btw, the noisy gearbox could be a noisy gearbox.

Or if your cowardly jack up a front wheel and try and turn it. If it turns freely - its in 2WD.

If its in 4WD high you'll probably feel the steering pull especially on tight corners.

or look at your free wheeling hub they should have 4x4 or 4x2 marked on them i cleaned mine off because i was worried about mine not being in four wheel drive i put them in two wheel drive most the time while on road

Thanks folks, the freewheeling hubs are in 4x2 for sure.

Just thinking, if I carefully look at the front axle whilst someone drives slowly will it be obvious if it is turning when it shouldn't be?

Yeah, if they floor it on gravel or ice.

Jack up the back on your trolly jack so the wheels are an inch or two above the ground and in 2wd drive forward very slowly - if you move forward you're in 4wd. Takes 30 seconds.

Simples.
