My TD5 110 needs a new exhaust, l booked it in to a Defender specialist and asked for OE quality, originally they said it would be a BOSAL system.
Now they tell me that's obsolete and they are going to fit a TIMAX system.
Are replacement exhausts pretty much standard? I mean will the TIMAX system be as good as any? I just want a standard replacement with centre/back boxes, no decat pipes or silencer delete pipes.

Well, in the absence of any replies l told them to fit the TIMAX system, but they fitted a BRITPART one.
The centre box is fine but the back section tailpipe was only about 1cm from the crossmember.
So l got the back section replaced for another make (TIMAX) and that was no better.
l ordered a factory rear section (£140+vat) which of course is a perfect fit.
The Defender is much quieter with the new exhaust, the baffles must have been shot or something in the old system as there were no holes in it.
The booming noise at 40mph and 65mph is gone.
So it was worth doing.

Well as far as my 300tdi is concerned, I've never touched the front section of exhaust, I fitted a straight stainless midsection about 4 years ago, and I treat the back section as a consumable and get roughly 2 ish MOT's out of one before its scrap. However the back section I bought for my last MOT was £27 new, and took less than half an hour to fit, so I'm happy to do that every couple of years.

Yes, I've certainly found that aftermarket exhausts are made to rather generous tolerances. I fitted a stainless one to mine a few years ago and that needed a certain amount of fiddling, spacing the mounts out with washers and drilling new holes to get the best line through the vehicle so it doesn't foul on anything. Hopefully I won't have to do it too often, seeing as it is stainless.

I fitted a Britpart back box to our Freelander. 18 months later...

Got my money back from the 24-month warranty though.
