My clutch is slipping

My first disco 2. i have had it for 4 months. the first month a metalic type of rattle appeared from around the fan area, I took it to a 4x4 specialist who diagnosed the A/c compressor bearings and quoted a recon unit £350 fitted. Ok do it, if it had'nt been so noisy i would have left it. when i picked up the jeep it was still noisy but not as bad, he showed me the old one, the case had a crack on it (People who justify what they diagnose gets me suspicious) so i paid, on reaching my home the noise increased, me and my suspicious (bad) mind. Went back following day he did'nt seem suprised to see me, then diagnosed the lower crank damper £180. I new he would get it right in the end even if he had to change every component.
My latest nightmare happend tonight MY CLUTCH STARTED SLIPPING!! Please point me in the right direction, if there are any checks to make to determine it is'nt anything else.:confused:
 
A JEEP? Are you joking... lucky?

If the clutch is slipping then the clutch is slipping, put it into gear, lift foot of the clutch, not much happens, slips a whole lot and not a lot of drive? Sounds like a worn clutch, but before you replace it all I would check the hydraulic system first, there is a chance that for some reason or other the system is not properly releasing.

Pulling away & low gear seems ok may be wrong, mainly on the motor way foot down overtaking reliant robin the engine speed increased then i caught up slowly, needless to say robin got away.
Being new to land Rover, a little disapointed i.e. poor performance, rough ride over uneven road surface, smokes under power 3rd 4th 5th exesive, normal running/cruising clean, tried all cleaners, new problem I suspect, engine noisy from what i'm used to (89 trooper 2.6 petrol 11 years, 96 2.5 vauxhall frontera TDi L.W.B 3 years, only time they went to the garage was for an M.O.T ) do i expect too much from the second most prestigious 4x4 ever, first being Range Rover obviously. Or is it quirks of the Disco as L.Rover puts it.:(
Clutch change!! the last time I had a clutch change was in a Ford Anglia Super.:eek:

What's the service history? Did you get it private or dealer? Did'nt you check the clutch when you bought it?

All modern cars have all the same problems,electronics,ABS,ESP,Air bag warning lights,air con,EGR,Injectors,ECU'S ...........as they are bought in from the likes of Bosch etc.................

Sounds like a worn clutch but as Discomania seid you might get lucky and it's just not realeasing properly.
You can't blame Land Rover for a worn clutch, depends on last owner (s) did they tow a 3.5 ton trailer up Snowden every day in wrong gear slipping the clutch all the time.A idiot can burn a clutch out in 10k where as used correctly you can push one well over 200k.

As for your smoking have you changed all your filters? binned your Egr?

Did the school run mum own it before you who slipped the clutch at every oppertunity and used excessive rev's to get it going, was it used for towing at any time in its life?

These are heavy vehicles, slipping the clutch does not go well, they need little revs to get them going, idle would infact do, so the clutch could have been hammered by bad driving.

Sounds like you have a bit wrong with yours, was it maintained before you bought it?

Early main dealer history, up to last owner local garage stamp, last owner woman.
Clutch fine until this week seems worse when driven a lot of miles.
Towing not to my knowlage.
I tow occasionaly, 1.5 Ton boat.
"It wasn't me!"
EGR binned not yet!!!

A woman drove it, not to sound sexist but, MOST women I see driving these, give it a heap of rev's and slip the clutch. I would put money on it that she did most of the damage, and you have been unlucky enough to get it come to its last legs while in your posession.

When towing your boat, lift the clutch with a LITTLE throttle, let the vehicle more or less take off THEN give it throttle, this will save your clutch heaps.

I always drive like that and my clutches last a long time. Also the turbodiesel seems to like this. I change my driving style depending on which car I am driving, with a petrol car I slip the clutch a little bit more.

Yes indeed, this is how I drive my 90 towing or not, in my mind for vehicles like these its the best way to behave.
