MOT fail

Been meaning to learn to weld all year, even watched a few mig welders on ebay...but that's as far as I've got, kicking myself seeing as the disco failed it's mot today on this...

What's annoying is the fail sheet said body or chassis has excessive corrosion seriously affecting it's strength with 30cm of the body mount...eh? There's nowt 30cms from the hole?

Anyway enough ranting, quick question does anyone know if a patch will get it through it's MOT or is it a new arch job from YRM?

Oh and does anyone in the north west want to teach me to weld in return for a very small sum of money

it's within 30 cm of seatbelt mount.

Mine was the same on both sides, all I did was plate underneath and put a small bit of filler on top to make it nice and smooth again and then just coated the whole inner wing with a nice shot of hammerite. Should see good for a while.

I replaced the arch on mine, cut the rot out completely, check the roof post next to the arch, mine was like yours, but was also rotten inside the roof post. Well apart from the filler that somebody choose to you

Outer wheel arch is a reasonably easy repair but make sure to remove the carpet and look carefully at the base of the post and also the inner arch. Have a thorough check in and around the seat belt mounting - repair panels are available for that (easy on).

The post is likely to need patching at the bottom, check the internal reinforcement as well as this is what the door is secured to when closed.

Thanks guys, because I need the car on the road asap I've got a local welder to do the job. He's going to patch both rear arches and also patch the front inner arch which it also failed on, plus a small repair to the headlight area, £80 all in.

Definitely going to look into getting a MIG and having a go myself in the future, would be nice to keep the disco running by being entirely self sufficient !!

80 quid sounds quite reasonable. i did the same as others just plated underneath and filled on the top, looks good and lasts well too.

Just make sure he pokes around abit. Mine started off not looking to bad but soon turned out to be far worse here are some pics lol

Wow, makes mine look mint

Why do Disco's rot so much in this place? I can understand the boot floor with the carpet etc but why do the arches go like this? Where does the water get in?

More mud collecting and holding water, and then in turn rotting. I've about 20 pics of horror from this year's mot lol

I had the same problem when I got mine. I saw a relatively bad hole there and poked around and found a bigger hole

I had both sides done by a local mobile welder for £150 which I thought was a good price so £80 is a bargain by my reckoning.

I know on a RRC which is basically the same the problem is that the sun roof drain pipe passes through the pillar and out under the wheel arch so there is a hole in the bottom - water and mud etc gets in and slowly rots it out. I've just completed extensive rust repairs to mine - £80.00 to do the rear arches is not bad at all but just be ready for the job to get much bigger. Oh and make sure you disconnect any electronic control units before welding just to be safe!

With ref to MIG welders.
Has anyone on here purchased a welder from Aldi's.#
Every so often they have some for sale, cannot remenber the size, but look not too bad for reasonable welding
Any thoughts?

ok just for mr noisy. Also that c-pillar had been filled with gobo to get it through the mot before I bought it.

Are three doors as bad with this rot? I don't have the advantage of being able to open a rear passenger door to see if my arch is rotten
