Hi I am the owner of a 4.0 petrol p38 and she appears to drink a lot of water so head gaskets need sorting. As well as this minor disturbance in the force when going back on the power after overun there is light blue smoke emanating from her exhaust I am assuming piston rings can thsee be changed without taking the engine out of the car?
Always wanted a range rover since the classics first came out and got this one mainly because it is one of the only cars that can curtsy to enable the wife to get in and out as she is disabled, and it is big enough for the great danoodle to stand up in.
Aiming to get the work done next weekend all being well lots of other silly things need looking at so probably not the last time I will be picking your brains
 
depending on how bad the HG has gone, i would be tempted with steal seal if its minor
as for the rings seems like a big job dont know if it could be done with engine in car due to timing set up etc
with them two problems may be easier to source a second hand lump
 
I reckon this needs a bit of investigating. It may be hg it may be a lot of other things. Same with the over run smoke. It could be rings but it could be a blocked breather etc etc. Don't use steel seal wAste of money. What's about miles history oil condition coolant condition.
Btw Piston ring can be changed without removing the engine but I don't advise it life is easier all-round with the engine out trust me!

Oil is fairly clean just not a lot of it and water is at present tap water use about 1 litre per 10 miles oops.got gaskets rings big end bearings en route for me to tackle it next weekend.
Also had to buy a new toolkit as tools in my shed disappear faster than biscuits at weight watchers.

Don't forget valve stem oil seals,
 
I reckon sensible advice is to strip back to the heads. Check what's going on. Come to a conclusion. By this I mean a true assessment of all the issues. Do not reassemble until your 95%plus certain you've got the measure of what's wrong. Be prepared to remove engine. Putting everything back together if it's no gonna cure the problems is seriously depressing and totally pointless. And will result in this vehicle going for scrap. So commit 2 days to the strip down then be prepared to do the whole job or bail before major spends.
