Freelander 1 Middle exhaust

My father in law has asked me to do some work to his Feelander 1 for its MOT the center box of the is peeling apart and needs replacing. The whole center section seems to be 1 piece including the CAT. I’m struggling to find the correct replacement part does anyone here have a part number or link to where I can buy the Center section? It’s a 2005 TD4.

When mine fails. I'm going to fit a universal type stainless steel box, which can be had for as little as £60. These have slip joints, which will slide over the original pipe, once the old box has been cut out.

That might be an option if I can’t find the proper thing
 
Sounds like the cheap one doesn't contain a working cat in the casing. Not that I'd be worried by that.
 
Am I right in saying that diesels still don't get checked on emissions, so don't need a CAT anyway?
I know my Defender just got checked with a probe for smoke 3 weeks ago and passed first time. - No CAT and no silencer

I remember seeing that the new MOT rules say if a CAT was originally fitted from factory it is a fail if it has been removed, but I'm sure they don't test the emissions, so unless the tester was a bit ar*ey, then it should pass no problem.

That's correct. There's no emmision check for a diesel. Just a particulate smoke test.

It just a visual inspection to see if the cat is still fitted. This means the guts can be removed, and as long as it looks ok, it'll pass the MOT.

That's exactly what I thought.
When I put the straight through pipe on my Defender, I was going to weld an empty CAT case over the outside of it, because of all the fuss I'd heard of with the new MOT regs, but I didn't get round to it and it passed anyway, with not a word mentioned. :D

Don't go for a stainless one. It's vicious when in electrical contact with mild steel. You'll get very rapid corrosion of the ends of the old system where the stainless overlaps them (although the stainless box itself will be fine). I'd go for an aluminised mild steel one.
 
From 2001 on Diesels should have a working CAT fitted. I'm going to go with the type approved middle section from ebay as it's still very cheap compared to say buying from kwik fit or paddock etc. Not going down the Stainless route as the back box was replaced just before my father in law bought car and is in great condition.

Another job that needs doing for MOT is replacing the fuel tank cradle as it's almost rotten through. Is this a difficult job any tips? ( may start another thread)

Think all Diesels from 2001 onwards should have a working CAT. Spoke to one of the suppliers on ebay who said they could supply me the middle section with what looks like a CAT (£65)but would be at my own risk if and no guarantee that would pass MOT. So going for one their type approved middle sections with CAT (£105)

Land Rover use stainless steel for the exhaust pipes, it's low grade stainless, but stainless it is.
The low grade stainless original exhaust and the higher grade replacement box, are close enough in chemical composition to prevent galvanic corrosion from occurring. ;)

My back box is stainless, mated straight to the corroded stump of the old box. No problem with additional corrosion so far, and it's been on over 3 years now.

There's no way the MOT tester can check the cat is working on a diesel. It's a simple smoke particulates test, nothing more. ;)

There are threads on here describing it - whether you can find them's another matter - Google does a better job of finding threads on here than the inbuilt search.

You're right - and someone cut theirs in half to make it easier to fit, and I think modified it so it bolts back together in situ... Otherwise I suspect it is a subframe-off task.

Must admit that surprises me? My centre box is going the same way. The outer skin has started to unpeel itself. It certainly LOOKS like aluminised mild steel - it's orange and rusty around where it has failed.
