Me again - really need some help...

well to say no change would be wrong.. it is coughing and spluttering now like a goodun.. now wondering (have been all along really) about timing... first thing is that I am confused more each time I look at the relevant rave pages about the order of the leads on the dizzy..

bearing in mind other than to change the leads and rotor arm it hasn't been touched so although your point about setting the timing is valid Kev I am confused as to how the timing could have been disturbed...

anyways.. could anyone with a V8 or knoledge of them please look at this piccie and see if that is right:

This counts the RH bank as being on the left and counted from the front to the rear 2, 4, 6, 8 and the left hand bank being on the right and from the front 1, 3, 5, 7

the rave seems to show it a little different in each of the two piccies it shows.

Tigger, leads look to be in the right order but position of dizzy looks a bit odd. Compared to my (admittedly older) RRC I'd say the dizzy is about 90degrees out. On mine, the vac advance sits between the thermostat housing and the waterpump with the ignition amplifier next to my power steering pump. Have you tried loosening the clamp on the dizzy and advancing/retarding to see if it will fire?

Kev. I was over Tiggers yesterday. The wire won't reach anywhere near the coil.I couldn't see anything for it to go on either. The metal spade contacts inside the plastic were dirty but not corroded so didn't really give any sort of indication as to wether it was used or redundant. The wire was showing as an earth with the ignition off and switched to live with it on.

Most odd. Perhaps it is a redundant wire, if the coil, ignition amp and alternator have the right wires in place then in theory it should go, but we all know about theory right?

not tried that as on my own.. just calling for more assitance maybe sommat to try with help..

Know what you mean it is a problem when single handed. Have you checked rave for correct position of dizzy? I seem to think that somewhere in there you should find a diagram showing what position the dizzy should be in and how the HT leads should be routed.

The fact it is coughing is a good sign. When I did my head gaskets a couple of weeks ago I had a similar experience inthatthe dizzy hadn't been moved and it sort of fired, coughed and died then refused to start. I was a tad concerned but went to bed and slept on it. The following day I opened up the dizzy and found dirt on the rotor arm and dizzy contacts, also, centr electrode was not making proper contact. Cleaned it all up, checked it all thoroughly then made sure all oleads properly routed and separated and hey presto, first touch of the key that V8 rumble was back.

If you were closer I'd come take a look but you is a bit far for a wee jaunt on a school day!

BTW a quick thought. You can tell how close your ignition timing is to what it needs to be by turning the engine by hand to TDC, pop off dizzy cap and your rotor arm should be pointing very slightly in front(or behind depending on your view) of the position of No1 Lead on dizzy (as in just fired). Make sure you are on the firing stroke for No.1 though. If you have put the leads in the wrong place on the cap, you should be able to move them all around by one or two positions as necessary and hopefully it will go. Does that help?

thanks Kev.. except how on earth do you move the engine by hand.. oh well.. .lol..

If your plugs are out it is quite easy, grab hold of bottom pulley with both hands and turn it. If that doesn't do it, remove viscous fan and rad cowl, stick appropriate socket and short extension on the crank nut and turn it with a ratchet SIMPLES;). (Make sure you don't ding your rad though)

thanks Kev.. and a little experimentation with help from James today has proved that the timing is out.. I think that the mech who looked after it for the previous owner (already proven to be a little bit of a cowboy) may have got the leads round the wrong way and as a result the timing is way way out.. the position of the vacuum advance on the dizzy being one of the signs.. obviously when I've put them how they should be then it won't run.. alternatively while I was going for it with a hammer to remove the PAS pump from the left hand cylinder head I may have knocked it..

anyways.. back to it..

so TDC - screwdriver in the spark plug hole and turn the engine till it's as high as it goes..am I getting there now.. how do I know I'm on the right stroke though..

thanks to everyone (especially Kev and Ratty) for their help so far.. thank God for Landyzone eh...

Dont know how to get your V8 running from here but I hav been outside and found that wire i think your on about. You need to look down between the alternater and water pump and youll find it. Here are some pics too

Smurphy. Thanks for posting the pics. I think he forgot to mention that he came across where the wires goes. It was purely by accident after dropping the blanking plug from the vac advance on the dizzy.:p

as Ratty said.. I had a serendipitous dropping of a little placky thing earlier.. while trying to find it I found what that wire was.. it goes under the thingy and it's a wossname wire.. I was so eggsited about finding out what was wrong I forgot..

think probably oil pressure or oil level or sommat.. and it was underneath the alternator bracket on the block rather than the head.. made no odds to trying to start but at least it's back where it should be..

still... TDC..ermm..

well I have broken the dizzy.. tried taking the rotor arm off again and the thing popped out.. some sort of spring underneath has come off and the arm wont seat properly to put the cap back on.. so went for it and took the dizzy off.... so now I guess I'm gonna have to find TDC at some point eh.. in the meantime there are three little screwy bolty type things that hold the plate down so I can try and fix the dizzy and I can't get them off... good old landrover and imperial damn them...

think my holiday is out the window now..
