Lol, I am a craftsman - boatbuilder/shipwright by trade but I have moved on/up a bit now.

For woodwork for example you have these clowns who spent £400 to £1000 on a brass handplane and thats just daft!!!

A good stanly one, (not handyman) from a carboot will do the job equally well so long as you know how to sharpen it and use it!

The modern stuff mostly made in india/china is a bag of **** though!!!

I loved to get sets of old old sorby chisels from a carboot and the steel is soooo good, wheras a brand new set of marples made in india you may as well make em out of ally

Mechanics tools, a mix of snapon, britool, halfuds pro, sandvik , kamasa , and my dads old footprint stuff he got to take when he left BT years ago!

I have to say the kamasa spanners I got as a cheapy set as an apprentice have done so so so well, even the one my mate welded to the car from the pos battery terminal is still going :p

Large subject. Generally not as good as they used to be years ago. Qualification requirements are mostly academic these days, practical skills take a back seat. Should be very much the other way around in my view.

Its those bloody NVQs that fooked it all up!

i think he meant craftsman tools ,but in your line of talking i woulkd definately agree ,i put alot of lads through college at my last place of work and the stuff they learnt was kids stuff ,no maching ,lathes boring etc,no electric principles etc just part fitting, but then nowadays people are impressed with big mission statements not knowledge, part of the reason i just **** about on my own now

lol I did wonder  I shouldnt drink before coming on here!!

What gets me the most about the NVQs is that they were ok when the first started for certain things but becuase the people who write them wouldnt have a job if they just left it there they meddle every year and change it all- now its so far off track its just meaningless for most stuff-- fookin quango maddness!!!!

Oh and craftsman tools are better than draper and thats all I will say :p

I'm ****ed, but a life time of experience is worth more than a piece of paper.

Yeah think he was asking about those, went off on a tangent there. Yep i agree with you and with Fett about NVQs. The way they were explained to me when they came out was that there were lots of people in industry who had work their way up, or worked in engineering for many years and learned skills who had no formal qualification. In others words, they could do the job but had nothing in writing to prove it. We were getting rid of many people at the time, industries were winding down, so NVQs would be given to people who had lots of experience who would do a short course and exam, as at least some sort of formal acknowedgement of their ability. I never dreamed at the time a short course, given to someone with no background at all, would be accepted as a formal qualification. It really is a bloody joke.

Evening Granddad, they have no passion now, sadly I think my current health problem could slow me down severely-but car repairs are a passion, best it can be and honest job for honest price

i have a friend just got his ticket on forklift training giving me a lecture on how to drive one, i grew up on small farm using them since me legs could reach pedals, but the worst is i showed him how to use machinery 20 years ago but his ticket gives him confidence mistakenly i believe

I am confused now , mostly cos my laptop wouldnt post then it turns out I posted twice anyhoo to conclude then:-

oil changed often is better then designer oil at 3 times the price

real pricey tools atre better than chaper ones for mechanics but not for woodwork

we dont know fook all about craftsman tools

and NVQs are ****

Agreed? :p

Cheeky git. Maybe that works in some places. But i am afraid the word honest, whether it be job or price, has never been a feature of most of the garage trade in my experience. Only thing i am glad about is after all the oil i got under my finger nails over the years, is i can still just about do my own work. If i could not i would not be running a Range Rover that's for sure.
