It would be interesting to see if people think that is crazed enough to be letting significant coolant out.

It'd also be interesting, both for you and the group, if anyone has any ideas on whether that could be coated in something rather than getting a new bottle as the new ones seem to be very ropey.

You're right, this definitely wouldn't result in the coolant drips you've seen coming from the engine. Nodge's suggestion on the plastic connector/bit sounds like the first place to look.
Got to be leaking from somewhere else anorl. Cracks won't do that alone. They normally just let the pressure out.

Reservoirs direct from propper LR main dealers are much betterer than those said to be genuine parts. The cost difference is only minor but one is known genuine... The other int, no matter what it looks like or what the seller ses. It can easily be a copy or reject.

They even sell genuine reservoirs ont eb ay, complete with a coating of genuine oil intside.

When I order genuine parts from the main LR suppliers, they come in LR packaging with LR warranty. I'm sure they come through the same supply channels as LR parts (lets face almost everything on a LR comes in from 3rd parties).

going by the feedback on here, I'm sure LR suppliers are now supplying inferior quality expansion bottles.

I disagree LR are selling duff reservoirs. We only have the word of one person who was unhappy with his, who was told it was LR genuine. He doesn't know for certain what was in the LR genuine box as he doesn't have one from a LR main dealer for comparison. This is pivitol to the scare mungering created on the web. In his view it's genuine as he was told it was. He wants to bring down LR's rep because he's angry. But he doesn't have proof in what he's saying. The seller will always deny anything wrong. He has assumed he's right. A genuine reservoir should last 3 to 4 years with normal use before cracks become a problem. I went through 3 in similar life span to what others get.

I would agree LR don't make reservoirs themselves... But the ones they supply are backed up in the knowledge it has come through the right channel. Can the same be said for other reservoirs in official LR packaging from none LR main dealers? I would say no. Reason being it's so easy to get hold of genuine packaging. Garages buy in parts then use them. It's easy to then put something in the box and sell it on with the packaging of an approved item. It's known in the trade this happens.
 
I think its so hard today to confidently say where a part has originated from and that goes for everything not just LR parts.
People make fortunes on replicating manufacturers packaging etc.
 
Another daft question... will it be ok to fill the system with just water while looking for the leak rather than waste coolant?

It was covered on top gear many years ago. The best place to sell cheap "copied" parts is in production. They then listed where manufacturers had been caught out by this. Vauxhall with oil filters for eggsample.

Years ago LR announced holler grams ont packaging but it never happened.

Yes, as its not cold weather so no problems of freezing over night. And if yer promise to fill correctly soon so it has the correct oats coolant with rust inhibitors etc.
 
Ummm... bit confused... filled the bottle with water... engines been running a while now... Can't see any obvious leaks from anywhere... the water level hasn't dropped... nothing dripping underneath??
Could it be something to do with it being parked on quite a steep driveway???
EDIT: it' on a flat surface now but where I got it from was a steep driveway nose facing downhill.

No. It's where the top hose of the radiator connects to the cylinder head. It's right at the front, but under the inlet manifold.

You're current tool kit won't help you get at it.;)

No. The coolant expansion tank will always be half full, regardless of vehicle angle, even if the car is on its roof.:eek:

No as that wouldn't empty the expansion.;)

Luckily I just brought some extra tools ;)
I can't see any water coming out from anywhere, checked (as much as poss) around the radiator, round the expansion bottle... I've followed every pipe that is possible to see without dismantling everything... the only 'evidence' of the leak is an empty bottle and a few drips on the blokes driveway and I saw one droplet hanging from the plate underneath when I went to look at the car??

Ok but could it be leaking elsewhere because of it being on a hill??

Could coolant have been 'pooling' (then leaking) somewhere in the system because of being parked on a hill?

From what I can make out the car hadnt been used for a while so maybe it has a minor leak which is evaporating before leaving evidence?
 
Why don't you fill the expansion tank up to the max mark and zero the trip, see how many miles it takes for it to go down to min. When my leakage problem started(ooer missus) it lost about half an inch in two or three weeks, then nothing for a month or two the the whole tankful line about 50 miles. Enter K seal.

I said where the most likely location was yesterday. ;)

If it's leaking down the front of the engine, then it's the top hose outlet. It's common on BMW engines to use low quality plastic components, for crucial cooling system components.
Why don't you fill the expansion tank up to the max mark and zero the trip, see how many miles it takes for it to go down to min. When my leakage problem started(ooer missus) it lost about half an inch in two or three weeks, then nothing for a month or two the the whole tankful line about 50 miles. Enter K seal.

I've just come back out to it after allowing it to cool... and now have a wet patch (ooooh) from the back of the engine it would appear.

I stopped my leak just by putting the correct mix of oats in
