Take the cap off the expansion tank, then remove that plastic ring that states the coolant type and give the neck of the tank a clean. If you can see tiny cracks, the coolant is evaporating away.

Obviously, only remove the cap with the engine cold.

Thanks. I have literally just done what you've said... as you suggest there are small cracks around the neck... 1st thing on the list to replace.

Be careful how you get the old one off. There's some sort of fastener holding it place which I broke when I changed mine, it's only held in place by gravity now.

I'm not sure bother to remove it today (unless absolutely nessasary) as although it does need replacing my plan is to trace the 'main' leak.

Mine was leaking either at the water pump joint or the head gasket, I never determined which. I just stuck a container of k seal in and the leak stopped. This sort of action is frowned upon on here but I've always been a bit of a rebel.

It would be interesting to see if people think that is crazed enough to be letting significant coolant out.

It'd also be interesting, both for you and the group, if anyone has any ideas on whether that could be coated in something rather than getting a new bottle as the new ones seem to be very ropey.

You're right, this definitely wouldn't result in the coolant drips you've seen coming from the engine. Nodge's suggestion on the plastic connector/bit sounds like the first place to look.

Funny you should say that. My ex was a mechanic 500 years ago and he suggested exactly the same as you.
Which, if I'm honest, is a consideration given the age, mileage and more important things to spend money on....Ummm.

As you say it may (possibly) be evapoating a very small amount from the crazing but most def is not the 'main leak'.
Oh... GG while your here just wanted to thank you Re the rave manual link... (Couldn't find the link again to post), all downloaded and worked a treat. Thanks

If you're at your wits end trying to fix the leak, consider it.

If it is an obvious component that's faulty, address that. If it is the plastic piece that Nodge describes, I would imagine that its going to be a bit flexible and not a good candidate to be sealed with glupe - all you will have done is possibly clog up your cooling system and still not fixed the problem.

Agreed. I will attempt to find the leak and repair properly but if all else fails then it may be an option.

I said where the most likely location was yesterday. ;)

If it's leaking down the front of the engine, then it's the top hose outlet. It's common on BMW engines to use low quality plastic components, for crucial cooling system components.

Apologies. You did... Sorry didn't mean to seem like I was ignoring your advice.
When you say 'the top hose outlet' is that from the expansion bottle?
