get twin torpedo tanks added under the sills they hold 35 or 45L each, i have got 2 on mine and a reduced fuel tank and another 2 tanks, think it takes about 150L of lpg and 20petrol and does what it does on that much fuel, i dont wanna work it out per mile will probably cry

why bother? by the time you have done all that, you might as well get a diesel,
you would have to do serious mileage to reap the benefits, as for the looks and limited off road ability if needed, also the extra weight!
diesel for me!, when it needs filling up you have to fill it up,
ie if you park it in the drive all week and don't use it, it will be very economic,
but a car is for use, and at the weight of a disco, td5 diesel is quite economic

yes i would agree with you about finding a filling station but LPG cost 65p and deisel 1.40 ish. Plus you can normall save a lot on the purchase price of the vehicle.

The V8 quicker smoother and better for towing
I’ve had 6 Range Rover V8 petrol’s over the years one with duel fuel, I was getting around 13 to gallon on LPG which I was not impressed with plus the engine runs hotter, and as said when you want to fill up you have to search for a garage that sells LPG, I found the LPG a general pain the arse. My last Range Rover was the one with LPG and I was glad to see the back of it, my Discovery Diesel I have to say is the best Buy I have made vehicle wise, it’s reliable; it pulls like a train, and as for being noisier than a V8 not a bit of it mine has been professionally sound proofed, towing I think personally my Discovery tows better than a V8, the heavier the load the more is seems to dig in. My engine has also been tuned and runs like a dream, the majority of Landover diesels are just factory set and therefore are not running to their full potential.

you get 13- 15 max on LPG I get between 30 and 35 per gallon on diesel plus you waste LPG searching for a station that sells it
I get 14 mpg travelling around town etc, Doubt if you get 30 - 35 around town. More like 23 - 28 unless its been chipped. Also, I dont search for LPG stations, I pass the 60p litre one on my way to work every day. No probs towing my boat down to Cornwall either, I know where all the LPG stations are & 24hr too.

Only one with duel fuel? thats not a valid point, Could have been a poor setup. Mine runs 98 degrees max, ( Hawkeye) no matter what road condition. Bul**** about running hotter

Having only owed one V8 with LPG I don’t know what I’m talking about, well for your information in case you haven’t read my post properly, I’ve owned quite a few V8s and have stripped and rebuilt more v8 than U care to remember, so I am more than aware of the engines workings and LPG does run hotter so don’t tell me it’s bull****, qualify your bull****

So, you've built a few V8's, WOW! My 9 year old could do that. Easy to work on. But, do you have experience in tuning LPG? When I had a Marina van back in 1983, LPG only, funny enough that didnt run any hotter either.

Why are you so desperate to convince everyone you are right and I am wrong, over a point that is so childish, and because your IQ is low you resort to insults that in its self is childish and pathetic, and shows you for the person you are congratulations.

Just like my experience with a D1 V8 Disco. I found I had to plan every journey so I knew where I was going to get gas - and quite often the place I stopped had run out / stopped doing LPG. It was bad enough solo but a nightmare when towing the caravan (especially as I only got around 100 miles before refuelling) as many places had very poor access - eg one near Taunton where you had to reverse up to the pump.

Had the TD5 for nearly 3 years now and much happier. I like LPG in principle but unless you always do the same journeys / stay local it's no use to me.
had the same experience myself ,allways on the look out for lpg ,ive found td5 not only more economical but a pleasure not watching fuel on long journeys:)

What more can you say when someones experience of LPG was once, back in 1983.

LPG does burn hotter the same way that unleaded petrol is hotter than the old 4star leaded, a V8s radiator and cooling system can handle the temps whith out any problem if the system is in good order, therefore youwon't see any difference, no doubt the Marina van back in 1983 had a good cooling system as well.

I've yet to find a vehicle with LPG only as stated the the Marina van had.

We have two company LPG vans both a year old and they are LPG and with a small tank for the petrol for starting/reserve they are classed 'duel fuel' from the factory so we don't pay the London congestion charge the place where the vans live every working day..

As for my disco my third V8, LPG no way, don't need it.. it's for bar BQs only :D

Easy now boys, we're just talking remember. There are some folks who like LPG and good luck to them.

There are others who prefer diesel.

My take on this is that when you take everything into account the running costs of both are going to be similar - so how do you choose between the two?

I'm a self-confessed diesel fan and I know that I can drive more that 600 mls on one tank and that is important to me - also the performance that I've had from a number of re-mapped TD5 is more than adequate. The ready availability of diesel out in the sticks where I live is also important to me.

The biggest single component of running costs is depreciation: V8's depreciate more than diesels, so IF you buy a V8 it is imperative to ensure you negotiate a purchase price that will reduce your loss to a minimum.

But don't go slagging each other off just because you have different opinions, it's just not nice.

Well I'm gutted!

It’s not a case of slag gin off, if someone makes a valid contribution and another member than makes derogatory remarks about that person, and calls into doubt that person’s ability and knowledge, it is only right and proper the person making the remarks validates them, or establishes something constructive to say.

i also found that provided someone else has suffered the deprecaition you can buy a V8 for less than 2/3rds of the equilavent diesel model

If anyone is going to buy a DI or DII v8 - they need to ensure they buy it for the right money as it will be hard to sell on unless priced attractively, imo.

I have had many Diesel , petrol & LPG cars over the years, my other car is a Diesel. I do prefer Diesels, but with the price of fuel going up all the time filling the greedy governments pockets, Diesel is getting less attractive to me. If I were to buy a new small car now such as Fiesta or Corsa then I would buy petrol as purchase price is cheaper & petrol is cheaper. I am happy that most people don't like LPG as this keeps the cost down. Remember when Diesel used to be half the price of petrol? If a majority went to LPG then Mr Chancellor would surely jump on it.
The bloke who started this thread has just purchased the car only to be told by a majority of you that he's made a big mistake. Pricewise I think it was too expensive, but as long as its a good one then it should last for many years as long as its cared for.

Hi chipster,

I had a D2 v8 on lpg, I found it was a fantastic car with a superb drive and glorious sound and was superb towing twin axle caravan.
My experience with the lpg was that if you look on the lpga website you can see all lpg sites around the country and i never had a problem getting gas.
mine had two 40 litre tanks where the original petrol tank was and a replacement 25 litre petrol tank. My moans were because of twin tanks the first 40 ltrs would fill quickly and then slow to a crawl on the pump as it pushed the next 40 litrs in, quite common i was told due to tank set up so perhaps you are not filling both tanks (if you have two) thinking the pump has stopped. Also my filler was mounted on a bracket next to the towbar, real pain as was almost impossible to fill with caravan attached as hitch got in way, some have fillers in the side which would be far easier.
My running costs were great however as at the time(5yrs ago) i was paying an average of 42pence per litre so was getting almost 3 to 1 equivalent to diesel(1.20ish a litre then) so i had it at right time.
I would say find out from any good lpg fitter what size tank or tanks you have and print off lpga web site list of fuel stations and leave in glove box(i think you can now buy printed guide) and enjoy the beauty of the wonderful V8, lastly i was told by several good mechanics that the V8 in a D2 is a well proven lump originating from the Americans and loves the lpg fuel and i have to say it never let me down

Enjoy

The truth is that many of us would love to have a V8 over a diesel, the sound, the power, and if fuel was cheap then we would but it's not and LPG still seems problematic imo! To be honest i seriously considered a V8 but was more put off with the potential problems of a slipped liner than anything else!

Hi Folks!

This has certainly opened a can of worms

I did pay top price but it does has a FSH and a nice PRINS LPG system. It is absolutley mint and drives superbly. The LPG system actually takes about 70 litres.. Christ knows what I was doing on Day 1 !

I have never driven a Diesel but the V8 does turn a few heads

Thanks for all the comments.. all interesting stuff

Hi there, I bought a d2 51 plate 3.9v8 es 4 weeks ago, 64000 miles with all mots for £1700, it is in mint condition. I bought it for a family trip to Cornwall which it did without a problem. We covered over 1000 miles whils away. its sat on the drive until last weekend when i went to Eastnor Castle lr show at the weekend, a 400 ish mile round trip, it never missed a beat. Its not on lpg and i dont intent it to be either, it a family weekend/camping vehicle, I reckon im getting 17-18 mpg. i have a few other vehicles including a 200tdi defender. I dont think it does much less mpg than fender, although thets only used for laning. If your happy with it (and lets face it a v8 will always put a smile on your face) then it doesnt really matter what it cost to buy or run
