Land Rover Series 3 completely dead with charged battery.

Check the terminals on the battery are clean, check the connection are tight and on the right way round. after that check the earth cable from battery to the chassis/engine. then check the wire going to the starter solenoid. All connections need to be clean and tight.

Do any of the other elect bits work , horn , wipers , washers

Completely dead electrical bits but from my live end of the battery to the indicator connector I can make the bulb light up.

After reconnecting the large current lead to the battery It’s trying to turn over.

struggling to reply to everyone correctly as new to this.
Thanks a load for the help so far though !!

I’m currently trying to get my Series 3 going.

not started for two years since my dad tried.

battery is fully charged but no noise or lights turn on with key is turned. ( only the smooth clicking of the key turning)

Not sure whether it’s a fuse issue
Or a
Earth issue
Or a
Maybe ( but I doubt )an issue with the starter motor

vehicle was driving two years ago.

slightly clueless on how to get it starting again.

would be thankful if some help.

Vehicle is trying to turn over now, still no electrical devices turning on, not sure why not as I can run a bulb from the live end if the battery to the indicator switch And it lights up ,
but if I run it from the negative earth end it doesn’t light up ? Is this helpful or just standard ? Is the fault between the live end of the battery and the indicator ??

It might depend on why it was parked up in the first place ?

It'll need fuel, air, and a spark to work ...

And you must have good earths, to the engine, gearbox and body back to the battery ...

That’s progress well done
When ignition is on is the red charge light on , green oil pressure light , does the orange glow plug light when the key turned past ignition but before engine turns

so all you Did was clean connections on solenoid and now it tries to turn over on key?
Can you post a pic of the solenoid connections
And one of all engine bay
And one of back of alternator where wires are

If you read page 19_22 in the green bible that will tell how to bleed the fuel system . This ensures diesel fuel getting to injectors and gives a better chance of starting
Have you checked radiator level and engine oil level
Have a look inside air cleaner too see if clean and has some oil in bottom
The front part of manual explains all,the simple servicing procedures

Is it petrol or a diesel as if it is now turning over the next steps will be very different.
If it is a is a diesel I would bleed the field system as mentioned above, and then make sure you have the glow plugs working well
As Without them it will not start at all.
If it is a petrol you will need to check there is a good strong spark otherwise it will Not start.

Previous owner had trouble starting the engine and kept trying until the starter stopped making a noise.
Seems to have have damaged the starter ? ( loud clicking noise coming from the starter.)

I’ve not got diesel in it at the moment , will have to go get some from town. Wasn’t expecting to get this far in a day.

I’ve given it a wack with a piece of wood but still nothing.
After cleaning earth wires and connections to the battery my electrics seem to be working in places.

Currently stuck with the starter making a clicking noise, previous owner couldn’t start engine and when he tried he seemed to damage the starter. ive hit the starter with a piece of wood it didn’t start help.

Going to try hand turning the engine to see if it’s seized with a spanner ?

I have no diesel at the moment

all my electrics seems to work now as far as I can tell( the bulk of it anyway)

ive done all this and it seems to have worked !:) lights working starter motor making a clicking noise.
( I have no diesel in it after bleeding it )

giving the starter a tap with wood still not doing much. Thinking of trying to turn the engine with a spanner?

thanks for the help so far !! Should be joining the raf ( corona permitting ) so would love to have it ready before move to Birmingham.

The solenoid on a petrol starter is remote from the motor itself, it should be on the bulkhead. It looks like this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Series-2A-3-12V-2-25-Petrol-Starter-Solenoid-13H5952L/222873497964?fits=Car+Make:Land+Rover&hash=item33e44bb16c:g:jYMAAOSwP3Jb0wjb
If you have a diesel its on the side of the starter motor.
As well as the big wire from the battery on the solenoid there should be a small wire, white with a red trace that comes from the ignition switch.
I’ve found the switch ( was larger than I was expecting ) cleaned ends of wires and starter makes a click ( felt like engine almost juddered)
All electrics seem to be working well ! Continuing to clean earths as I go through. thanks for the help so far !

The solenoid only engages when the red/white wire is energised with 12v when key turned fully Here’s a pic of mine not sure if it helpsView attachment 205159
Can see my reflection in yours it’s shining so much ahah ! I’ve found it and I think it might need refurbishment,
Going to hand turn the engine with a spanner to ensure it’s not seized.
It’s a lot of information to take in at the moment but learning lots.

You can also run a flying small lead from the spade terminal on solenoid to positive on battery
And just touch the battery pos for a few seconds this should energise the solenoid and turn it over
I’m getting a signal to the solenoid because I can hear it when I turn the ignition ? Strong clicking noise. Think my starters the next step ?
