land rover 90 2.5n/a advice

just bought my first landrover not too sure about it yet. it's a 1986 2.5 n/a.
has anyone drove any sort of long distance with these? also wanting to repaint it what do you think of using a roller? thanks mark.

I had one and used it for several years covering some significant mileages. I think the longest journey I did was about 700 miles in 24Hrs.
Totally reliable and although no speed machine it would hold a genuine 65MPH all day and still return 28MPG.

I bought mine direct from the MOD so it hadn't been played with by previous owners, basic but an excellent machine.

Will second that!
 
Its a slow, steady and stubborn engine. Will keep on plodding as long as you don't push it too hard. Very basic to fix if it goes wrong. Will sit at 60-65 all day long. Steep hills can slow it down but it will get to the top.
 
The best engine ever built!

She will keep going long after the others have fallen apart, and your very basic toolkit is a hammer, a couple of shifters and a couple of screwdrivers, with these you can always get home ... eventually!
 
Yep good reliable engine. Might not be the worlds fastest but it will get you there no problem.

Roller in the street worked well for me!

It doesn't appear to have any side lights, I think you will find this is not road legal in it's current format, when it was used as a plough it will have probably not been given a second look but now it looks like it certainly draws attention to the fact that it's not right. Front position lamps must be fitted - it may be a VT32 was issued to the MOTer to let it past this before due to the specific nature of the vehicle.

Also, if it was a plough surly the lower lights were even less effective?

Amazingly strong engine, when I first had my 2.5NA I only did short journeys in and around town, but I started using her to commute daily and go on longer journeys more frequently and I just got fed up, I did 200 miles in my 2.5NA one day, it took me 3 days to get over it, it was the noise that got to me - I fitted a 300tdi soon after. That said, many use them for long journeys and get on fine.

I don't find mine any noisier than my previous 90 with a 200tdi. With the smaller 205 tyres, the current 90 is happy at 50/55 mph.
As said before, simple rugged engine. You won't be racing anyone away from the lights, but very happy to plod along all day, and reasonably fuel efficient for a landy. It does have a timing belt, so check when it was last changed if possible.
 
First priority should be to fix those lights. My TD will plod along happily all day at 65 on the flat, a bit faster downhill and slower going up. Not particularly quick but it will always get you there, which is what a landy is all about :)

I recently painted mine with a brush and rollers. Using the right sort of paint and a foam roller you can get a pretty good finish. Give it a couple of coats, leave a few weeks to harden then go over with T-cut colour restorer in the right colour, followed by regular wax polish.
