Just replaced the rear UJ - too small??

Guys,

Just spent a few hours replacing the rear UJ (where prop shaft connects to rear diff), all went ok except that I noticed a small amount of lateral movement in the joint when assembled. I fitted it and gave it a short test drive and sure enough the joint is slipping up and down on the pivots, anything above 20 mph and the vibration kicks in, at very slow speed I can hear the prop shaft 'dropping' every quarter turn. I guess the crossmember bit of the UJ is too short or the cups are two short, unless I'm missing the point? I gave the chassis number to the supplier and they checked the part number I needed, I guess it's wrong but before I call them tomorrow is there anything I should check first? Defender 90, 1987.

I used the 2p trick in my V8 110 a few years ago. They're still whizzing around in there without problems, but I wouldn't recommend it! But not many fixes cost just 16p on a Land Rover!
 
Ok, well...

My Fender is now worth 8p more than it was yesterday!

I have to say the fit is perfect and whilst it's not going to be a permanent fix (I say that now!!) it gets me over the immediate problem of not having a working Landy. Thanks guys!
 
Just wanted to post a quick update and give a little credit where credit is due.


So... The 2p fix worked ok, but at about 40mph in 4th there is some vibration so it's not going to be a permanent fix. I emailed the supplier who had suggested the part number I needed based on the VIN. Clearly I've got a different propshaft to the original and need a slightly larger UJ and at the end of the day, it's my mistake, not the suppliers. However, the supplier has, without argument, volunteered to send out the correct UJ, free of charge. Result! (and excellent customer service). So, a big thanks to Famous Four (Famous Four - Independent Land Rover Parts, Accessories, Sales & Servicing Specialist - Land Rover Parts, Land Rover Accessories, Land Rover Vehicle Sales, Servicing & Repair for great service.

Isn't it nice to be treated decently by a supplier of goods or services. I don't know how much the U/J cost but now you and most of the Landyzone know there is at least one decent supplier out there and for whatever that cost is it's better than a TV advert for their business.

Why don't other company's realise that's things like this can create a lot of good will and loyalty from their customers
