big thanks to dollydisco for coming around and having a look at my landy and thanks for fixing my golf while you were here.

removed the rear diff last night to find this:

and then i picked these out of the axle body:

so today I am off to the scrapyard to get some new diffs.

also ordered a wheel bearing kit and rear caliper rebuild kit, but that has to wait till I get the diffs sorted.

so what happened, why did the center pinion break, anyone got an idea?

i still need to remove the front diff. how do i get the front half shafts out? i looked in the how-to-section but I could only find removal of rear half shafts.

It's a landrover, it's probably had a hard life and things will periodicly **** up - usually when you're skint or (like when my wheel bearing went) on a bank holiday sunday, it the middle of nowhere with no telephones or phone signal within a 10mile radius! Don't worry about it.

Iirc, you can buy the broken parts and it's a fairly easy fix - I saw a mate replace his in about an hour at a pay and play one day but he's done it quite a few times as his rangie really does have a hard life.

the fronts are a little harder to do than the rears, would recommend you get a manual to guide you through removing them, its not hard but there is to much to explain, OR you could make a donation to Dollydisco's yearly fuel costs if willing.

Bloody hell that diff's been done proper job. Lucky you didn't have it happen at 60mph like I did, would of been fun controlling a slide at that speed on those tyres :)

At least you know part of the story now ... wait till you check the font ... ;)

turns out the cv joint at the front was absolutely mashed and rounded of the half shaft.
luckily dollydisco came to have a look at it tonight and we should be getting s replacement diff and a complete hub unit tomorrow afternoon so it could be up and running by tomorrow night. woop woop

Glad to see things are beginning to look up!

The guy who sold it to you knew it had something duffed up, one of the damaged parts was already jiggered and he put it into diff lock so it moved. A piece of paper with your signature on it or not I would be tempted to call him and say you knew it was shot, you could have mentioned it and see if you can get anything out of him. I would contact trading standards and tell them, they will tell you where you stand legally. You might even get some cash back from him if you are lucky.

Obvious wasn't it ... :(

Be good if you get something back, but don't hold your breath ..

Agreed :( If you signed a bit of paper saying 'sold as seen' (or words to that effect) it's a one way trip up diarrhoea drive for you...minus seating.

signing that means nothing, it has no legal status at all and is totally irrelevant if it was bought from a dealer as they are not allowed to attempt to contract out of the Sale of Goods Act

however if it's a private sale then its buyer beware

I was under the impression it was a private sale? Agree that if a garage wanted me to sign something like that I'd tell them to get stuffed.

As i was always told and i could well be wrong, that as sean said buyer beware, when it comes to private sales, I surpose at best its a matter for the small claims court when dealing with private sales. But surely when some one says to you please sign this sold as seen document alarms bells should be ringing. But then again i have done it. I agree with other posts thou if the seller has any good nature left, then he should offer a part refund. Should all be sticking togther, not ripping each other off.

glad you got it fixed. in all honesty you should have gone prepared and tested the car. personally i would put this down to experience and cough up to fix it. keep the tyres though!! they do look good!

keep the tyres if you want, but you might aswell get the practice in replacing half shafts now as you will be snapping them often
as said before, its your responsibility to check over a vehicle before buying, if you were new to landrovers then it would have been a good idea to take someone with you who knows a thing or two. There are a lot of people in this world trying to screw you over to make money so trust no one!

Hey guys, I got it fixed now. I changed the rear diff, the offside front hub unit and the half shaft. filled it all up with oil and its all driving again.
Luckily it only cost me 60quid in parts so I am happy.
I know the alarm bells were ringing when I signed the "sold as seen", but I have put that phrase into contracts when i sold cars just to cover my back.

i should have really taken someone who knows about landy's but hey, thats life, you live and learn.

also i think its still not out of difflock. the light on the dash is still on even though i reversed it all the way up my road. i was told by dollydisco to jack one wheel up and see if the car moves when i put it into gear.
I am going to try this now, but if it turns out its still in difflock, how do i get it out of it?

also big thanks to dollydico for popping over and helping me with my disco!

as suspected, its still in difflock even though the the little gear lever is in high range and not difflock and i reversed it for 400meters.
what do i have to do so that it comes out off difflock?

i know this sounds stupid but is the transfer box good for oil? mates defender wouldn't come out of diff lock and we found his tbox was low on oil, filled it up and with a bit of forward/backwards it came free.

if not then the linkage could be bent or need adjusting i suppose
