Ok since the last post regarding the flat battery on 4 litre petrol rr I have not been near the car. Been girding up my loins to find out what is wrong with it. Son rang me and said will be round about 11 this morning to jump it. Went up and stuck the key in the ignition and turned the key it fired up within possibly two revolutions of the engine. Cue x file music. Bearing in mind the last time I tried it it was the classic turn key dash lights all dim and nothing. So my questions are what the hell and have I got the only car in the world that can charge its battery when stationary and switched off if so there is a fortune to be made from tesla electric cars.

Obviously wasn't a flat battery. More like a short somewhere robbing the starter motor of juice. It doesn't take much for a short to make or break, it will happen again if you you don't find it.

Could be the fact it's had to time to sit with the new battery on so all the systems have settled?

On RR.net there is an electrical troubleshooting guide. Check your way through it. Start with voltage drop on hthe cables between alternator and battery and starter and battery. Sounds like internal of cable degrading or bad earthing connection.

Starter motor perhaps needs a look at. It's either that or the other entity that lurks in every P38 known as Dick E. Connection.

If it does it again give the starter a light tap with a hammer - could be the solenoid sticking.
Is this the full 2-Pound club-hammer "light-tap" or the little Toffee-Hammer "light tap"?
There may be ex-"Boiler-makers Nut Floggers" reading...so a tap-calibration may be invaluable. ;)

Tap with handle of 2lb-club, gentle dropped thud from 6" above starter ... works for most vehicles, if you have to reach by swing said tapper, try a min-weight claw hammer, hitting with the habdle seems to work better than tapping with the metal end .. dunno why, dunt care ...
