Is £2,500 enough?

hi folks,

I just sold my old Mercedes and now have £2500 cash to get either a P38 or Discovery 2. My preference is a Range Rover of any engine type.

Is that sort of budget enough to get a good example that needs no major work? I realise at that price a rangie may need some issues sorting - but should I be looking for a Discovery instead?

I got my 4.6 for that price a few years ago.
67,000 miles, full walnut interior, service history, new tyres, airbags, two keys, the owners wallet, and a few other new bits. It's not perfect bodyworkwise, but it's been a brilliant buy.
Unless prices have shot up, you should be able to find a good one for that price.

I know nothng of RR. But I bought my v8 Auto D2 for 1200 quid with a years ticket. It has run fine, towed my cattle trailer around the place for almost 18 months, MOTed again no issues.

The Disco seems to be a bit more reliable although prone to rust so you need to be able to weld.

The P38 has a few weaknesses if not maintained: EAS, RF receiver and heater o-rings most likely to need attention. No parts are particularly expensive (except the rip off replacement RF receiver but there is a cheaper fix) but the time to do it is unless you do it yourself.

That's why eBay is full of cheap parts. Terrible shame but at the same time makes it affordable for me.

Its not actually a rangie!

But I know what you mean. Afraid it is a matter of hard economics for me. I just want something to tow me trailer on the cheap. We are fortunate round here, lot of retired folks with more money than sense. They buy the big beasts with a golden handshake, few years light use towing caravan etc., then sell when status value is gone. Easy pickings for the likes of me!

Hoping a fresh supply will be coming with the relaxation of pension pot regs!

In my defence, my Disco isn't a very original or collectible example. It is tatty interior, even more so after a couple of years cattle showing.Coils springs, and all the electronic ****e long disabled.
If you are really worried, make me an offer and you can restore it yourself!

Some good buying advice there. If it is from a nice retired couple with full service history etc then have a go. If it has cow**** up the doors then run away!

Always my policy when buying any vehicle. Look at the seller/history as much as the vehicle. Nice old couple with a caravan, or the sort of old boy that spends every Sunday polishing!

Farmers, young lads, anything with off road mods, I just walk away, not that I would probably be viewing anyway!

I wouldn't touch a Disco with a sh1tty stick, drove one to Dover and back, I was as stiff as a board the next day. Come on Grrrr , make something of that.

Thanks for the advice. I think Grrrrr is right to suggest keeping a wedge handy for inevitable repairs.

That's true, yes. And none of these are much under 15 years old now. But ... I've spent more on this Rangie than all my others added together and none of my cars has been under 10 years old.
