Hi there folks.
Just want to know if anybody could help me out with a problem. I have been offered a 1994 M reg disco 300 tdi with 126k for £1800, which i reckon is a good deal. The problem however is the insurance. I am only 20 - 21 next month - and can't get insurance under a grand anywhere. Even with my dad as the main driver and me named it is impossible. Does anyone know of somewhere I can get it a bit cheaper?I have tried all the big companies.

Any help appreciated!
 
they probably want a grand off you to drive anything at your age.
not much you can do except grow older quickly.

itll be easier when you get to 25 plus.
 
no use trying the old dad trick now, the insurance cos are wise to it.

I'd sell the disco and get an old series 2 or 2a, drop a nice cammed up V8 in her, put it on classic insurance and have some fun for a few years till the NCB builds up :D. While your at it start saving up for the repair bills you wll aquire to run anything with Landrover on the bonnet!!! that grand will be a drop in the ocean :eek:
 
God, you folk are almost making me think about getting a car instead of a Land Rover!

Managed to wangle a cheap quote out of Barclays now though - £ 560! I bit her hand off and paid for it there and then.
 
Did you go into the Barclays branch or have you a number for them? I have an 18 year old son (passed his test) who would love to drive my Disco when he's home from Uni, if I could get it insured for him... at a reasonable cost that is....
 
I got the number from the webiste.

The woman on the phone was really halpful actually. She did everything she could to make it cheap.

My dad's Rover 75 is insured with Barclays, and I was a named driver on that. To make the Disco cheap, we took the NCB from the Rover to the Disco, got the Rover insured with just my dad on it with no NCB and put him as the main driver on the Disco (with 9 years NCB) with me and my mum named on it. It was all the woman on the phone that thought of it!
It made the Rover slightly more expensive, but it is worth it to half the price of the Disco!
 
Hi, I went with Lancaster. They have a specialist Landrover department. I got Fully Comp with Business Use and a named driver for £260. I have zero no claims so it might have been even cheaper with some no claims under my belt.

P.S the zero no claims is nothing to do with any careless driving, Uninsured drunk loonatic wrecking a previous vehicle (which was parked up for the night) walloped my no claims out.
 
segunitb1 - i'll keep lancaster in mind for when our renewal is due, any idea what they are like regarding LPG conversions?? some insurance companies are funny with these

Mine is the '95 3.9 V8 with a Landi Renzo LPG conversion on. They didn't have a problem with the conversion. I found a few that were funny about the LPG conversion and wouldn't touch it even with the installation certificate but Lancaster were great.
 
ive had various quotes from 425 quid to over a grand!
got no NCB to go on it either cause the disco is my second car.
 
nice one segunitb1 - both ours are currently with Sheilas wheels, who while cheaper than others at the time, ain;t cheaper than Lancaster, and also have pretty crap customer service too, so won;t be renewing with them next time round.

Hi All,
I have just changed my insurance to ecarinsurance and saved £200 it is now £350 a year with home start recovery which is worth £100.

Trevor.
