I'm doing Morocco in September / October :)

Also, think what you are going to store the footage on, a 64GB card (biggest you can get) is only going to last you a day. I am going to be bringing my laptop and two mirrored 3TB hard drives with me to load everything on each night, so you are welcome to load it up on that each night but you will need two hard drives to store it on when you get back until you have edited it down to something nice and small :)

Just a thought be will you have solar panels & insulated covers for your fridges ?

Last summer when we were in Zagora our twin battery system would only keep a 60l waeco fridge going for about 12 hrs max. Was fecking 46°C at 10pm at night like :D, don't know what the temperature was dureing the day as me thermometer only went up to 50 !!!

Should be a bit cooler in November :D

(so, no!)

As Bump said won't be that hot hopefully :)

I am putting a solar panel on the roof though, on top of my roof storage box with a battery inside to trickle charge during the day. Then going to run some LED lights and a USB hub to charge phones up and maybe a little USB fan in the roof tent off it.

Soz ! Says "September / October " in the title ! Regardless I'm sure a cheap solar panal would pay for it's self on a journey like that as a twin battery set up dunt half hammer your MPG !

Yes, i started the thread before actually booking the trip, and it's kind of developed from there.

The way my split charger is setup, it will never put much current draw on the 1st battery, it will only ever "trickle charge" the second battery, this reduces the strain on the alternator and consequently the overall MPG. However, because of the complexity of the setup, I'd have to do some careful research into seeing if a solar panel would affect it or not. Can't see why not but, there are some clever electronics going on! I've got a spare solar panel lying around.

And... any advise / suggestions are welcome... even if we choose to ignore them ;)

You're going to end up very top heavy!
:rolly:

Naaahhh should be fine!

The myway evolution is one of the lightest tents you can buy at 35KG, aluminium front runner roof rack is 22KG, high lift is 14KG and the storage box is lightweight plastic, probably half a KG tops, so that leaves me with 3.5 KG's spare to fill the roof box with light stuff, maybe backup tent and sleeping bags and a spare first aid kit. All under the 75KG limit :)

Got it all planned out mate, don't you worry about me :D

Hi Jason how did your solar set up work? I have a 50l waeco and yes will be merzouga beginning August. No split charge fitted as yet but still a month to go

Hi

Not done a solar set up yet but will be doing in the near future !

First twin battery charging system was a cheap effort off e-bay that melted once we got to Morocco  Now have a "T Max " system that works fine but like I already said your MPG can take a knock .

Also for info if you flatten your main battery & then press the button to link/use your 2nd battery to start your engine, it wont start it !

Yes I was looking at the t max system, out of interest which battery did you go for as your secondary and was the cigarette lighter attachment sufficient for the fridge or did you wire it in? I don't plan to be running anything else at same time although have 2 additional sockets...

I went for a normal 80AH car battery but am going to change for a cheap solar battery intended for electric fencing !

I wired a socket in 6 mm2 in the back straight from the battery, but have now hard wired the fridge in and done away with the socket as the bloody things come un plugged and more to the point unnoticed under vibration !!

The first time we went my air horn wore a hole in the radiator with the vibrations
frome the "wriggly tin" formations caused by other vehicles on some of the tracks

If anyone will be top heavy I reckon it will be me :) 2 x 35Inch tyres plus a roof tent plus whatever else I decide to throw up there :)

Why you putting them both on the roof? Can you not do what I am doing and put one on the back door and one on the bonnet?

the weight of it would kill the bonnet, I may put one on a spare wheel mount on the back but tbh I'm not too worried about the weight on the roof.

Rubbish! Bit of checker plate on it and make sure you don't slam it and it will be fine I think.. Good to get some of the weight down the front of the car too :)

I put one on a mantec wheel carrier and the other on the roof minus the rim to save weight and as its never likely to be used. Only one flat on quite a few trips to North Africa and then it was my fault driving over some pointed reeds when I could have driven round.

I'm slinging one under in the tyre store slot and probably the other in the back... but... i don't have the same space issues as you guys! :D

Problem with the roof is getting it up there too... they're not light!

Tempted by a GoPro too now... will look into them a bit more.
