Hi,

I have a problem with my 1987 110 2.5NAD.

I noticed after arriving at my destination, when I turned the engine off and took out the key, the ignition lights came on.

THe engine started fine and the lights went out. A few miutes later when I turned the ignition off, the engine kept running. I tried different switches etc and when I tried the indicators, there was a bit of a fizzle from the indicator relay (i'm guessing that's where the noise came from) and the engine cut out. THe indicators are now working when the ignition is turned off but other things like the heater fan are still only working when the key is turned on.

I must have a short somewhere but does anyone have any pointers where to look before I pull the dash apart? I don't see any obvious problems at the fuse box.

thanks a lot,
Robert

Yeah - too twue - especially as them switches seem to have a habit of falling apart. If the engine still runs tho would think the wiring prob is in the steering column - connected to if not at the ignition switch? And there was a "fizzle" from that direction I think?

Hi,
THanks for the replies.

I took off the console and had a look but could not see anything wrong. Had a good wiggle of everything but the lights stayed on solidly.

Another couple of things, if I press the brake pedal, the ignition lights go out and the temperature gauge drops back to the left as far as it goes. Also the temperature gauge flickers, as do the lights with the indicators. I notice that the indicators, temperature gauge and brake lights are all on the same fuse.
Also the windscreen washer is working with the ignition off. Both the above fuse and the fuse for the washer look to be fed from a white wire which I take it at some point is common to both and comes from the white wire coming off the ignition switch,

My current theory is either the ignition switch is knackered or the white wire is shorting with a continuous positive (brown or purple) somewhere before it gets to the fusebox. Does that seem likely?

thanks,
Robert

Yeah - thats a guddun. Think u may have more than one fault there. Maybe a short and a bad earth which suggests wiring loom to me. If everything goes "normal" when u press the brake pedal then I think that is where ur earth is coming from. Ignition lights staying on surely means that the key isn't disconnecting the power? Sorry to state the obvious but tis best to start from the ground and work up sometimes?

THe key is doing something as the heater fan only comes on when the key is turned on. It looks to be only certain circuits that are staying live.

Yeah but the ignition switch does alot of stuff - u have several positions which all do seperate things (on the switch I mean). Try n narrow it down to which position turns the fan off, does the stereo still fire up? Etc etc etc Only a newbie but like chasing down problems like this. N plenty of clever blokes wotchin that can throw in their tuppence worth when we start making some sense.............

the switch has a few contacts in it, the fan, fuel gauges, brake light and radio are switched a smidge before the engine and lights. Probe the wires on the back of the switch and switch the switch to see if it changes how you would expect.

A white wire is switched live. Check your earths also, this sounds like it could be a poor earthing issue too.

now found that if I take out the fuse in the top left which is for horn, clock (which I don't have) ,flash main beam and interior light, the ignition lights go out. This circuit is permanent live, brown wire on one side of the fuse and purple on the other.

Waiting for hands to thaw and then go back out!

thats the circuit causing me problems. Have tried pulling out the hazard switch but made no odds?

where are the black earth cables behind the dash actually earthed to the body?
