Ignition Key Sticking in Barrel!!!!

If you do have too remove the "stretch" bolts (thats what they are called) for the ignition barrel get yourself a reverse thread tap bolt extractor(£15ish) . Drill a hole down the centre of each offending bolt and turn the extractor ANTI clockwise and they screw in (Coz of reverse thread) therebye undoing the bolts and alleviating the need to spend hours with centre punches.. These bolt removers look just like thread taps but have the reverse thread on them. They do snap easily so gently does it and use the biggest size you can fit in the bolts.

i would assume you mean after he has cut through the stretch bolts to remove the whole ign, i cant see him getting a drill into the heads while its in situ

Centre punch is by far the only way to do this job!!!
Once you have loosened them they fly round
I would'nt be messing around drilling either as bolts are probably hardened,excess terrible,drill going to snap and go into your knee,if you do manage to drill it which I can't imagine, 9 times out of ten your bolt extractor breaks tooooooo

Depends on how heavy handed you are i suppose...Done them 4 times now by the extractor method and its worked everytime..you can get an offset headed air drill in at just the right angle ...But there you go...Each to there own..

where's the best place to get a new barrel? i have heard that if you wait until it seizes properly then the chisel/centre punch is the only answer but if you anticipate complete failure then the pins holding the barrel in place can be removed effortlessly IF the key is INSERTED and then TURNED to 'I' first... this may just be hearsay, who knows? anyone got a clue?bouyson

hi,
had same prob with my 2001 disco. if you get a locksmith out to it they can remove a pin from inside the barrell, cost me £40, had it done within an hour. only problem is that you can remove your key while the engine is running.

instead of getting shear bolts etc, u could simply use a dremel multi tool to carve a slit int hte top of the bolt. it can then be removed and put back in using a flat head screw driver.
Hi the Land Rover Discovery 'R' Reg that I ahve just bought three weeks agao has developed the same problem the igintion key sometimes works perfectly then it snookers you for ages before you can get it to go. Is there a real cure or is it just the way it is for Disco's the AA told me a garage would fix but I am not sure about paying £100 odd quid if the problem is going to happen again. The vehicle I bought 2nd hand is going out to Africa in October so I want it running right, and before anyone sayas why not buy a new Landy well we are a charity and can't afford a new one.
Any help would be much appreciated.

For a hundred odd quid you can buy a new ignition barrel and fit it yourself... by far the best answer (go through landy and you can use your old keys for it too!) mine did 100,000 miles before it needed a new barrel so that's not alot of cash for the mileage!
i found using a centre punch and hammer to carve a groove for a flat head screw driver in the top of the shear bolts was the easiest way to get the old barrel out ! )
Have done a few of these replacements, some drill out easy if you got access room for a cordless, but have also done it the hard way with centre punches and chisels, normally removes at least one layer of skin from my knuckles either way but its easier than getting someone else to do it. Anbody know of my old series3??? thats got the shear bolt tops still attached, and an old ford thats still around aswell
